Games that works great with wine on an old PC.

Okay guys,
Thought i'll make a thread for all those Linux users out there who likes playing games but has a very poor PC. Well most Linux native games work on an old PC but what if you want to play Windows games? You'll have to use Wine/Playonlinux but if your PC is old, then some games may not work on Linux even if it does on Windows. I say this because I've had previous experience with playing games on my old PC. My old PC specs:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory: 512 MB
VGA: Intel GMA X3100
Hard Disk: 80 GB
OS: Lubuntu 12.04 LTS

So here's a list of the games that I've managed to get to work on Wine/Playonlinux(note: these are games which works great and has an FPS above 20):

These where the games which worked with/without some tweaks. Now the games that work, but with a poor frame rate:

Half Life 2(wine, very low settings)
Call Of Duty: United Offensive (wine, expansion pack of Call Of Duty, Medium Settings)
18 Wheels Of Steel: Haulin (wine, very low settings)
18 Wheels Of Steel: Pedal To The Metal (wine, very low settings)
Realgta (Mod pack for GTA 3, sudden drop in frame rate in GTA 3 after installing this modpack)

That computer isn't THAT OLD... It just needs a memory upgrade. Even the early Core2 Duo can's handle Ubuntu Unity. You can find 2GB DDR2 memory modules for 15 US dollars.

Yes, it can and it does. But we are talking about games here and for running games, I prefer LXDE
I dont want to upgrade this system because I have another PC (which is the one i currently use)with 2013 gaming abilities in which I use Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and also for nostalgic reasons

I have updated this system a little bit more so now the specs are:
Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8 GHz
1.5 GB Ram
Intel GMA 3000
250 GB Harddisk
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

Hi you can try Trackmania Nations Forever :) It runs perfect with an MiniMac 2.1 (almost the same configuration than yours).

Project 64 (N64 emulator, again nix has emulators but this one works the best IMHO)

Could you please post the settings and configurations you had to do in wine and/or playonlinux to get these games to work. Specially what components you needed to install, like what versions of directx and other prerequisites and also which version of wine you needed for each difference game. Thanks.

OK, I've got an old machine: ThinkPad T30 with a 2GHz Pentium IV, 1 GB ram, 40 GB hard drive space.

So far I've only ran some games off the Lubuntu Software page, plus a SNES emulator... but I intend to get Civ III working again (it worked on this box under WinXP, so... hopefully?)

I'm eager to see if I can still run a PS emulator for NfS:Hot Pursuit, and if I can possibly get Sims 2 working on it later on. The hard drive and ram are a problem, of course, but I have some ideas there... he he

Oh, and RealMYST - I finished the game ages ago (no pun intended), but sometimes I just like strolling around the islands a bit.

Master of Orion 1 & 2 (GOG download/wine/DOSBox)
Essentially, I'm using the DOSBox version of the game, using wine to launch it. the default settings are fine in the conf file.

It launches from this:

Obviously I changed the directory names to be more friendly to Linux, I hate escaping spaces.

The moo2.conf file looks like this. I left out comments, and things you shouldn't touch.

The autoexec section runs automatically, and it calls from wine's drive c, not a linux directory, because it is the windows version of DOSBox.
The only thing on here you might consider changing is fullscreen to true. Other tweaks as neccessary, but you will know your system. Definetely don't play with CPU. Yeah, I know you got 8 cores, and setting cycles to max seems like a great idea, but the more precision is applied, the worse the quality gets. I think that is true for just about all DOS games that have graphics.

a bit off topic, but Morrowind - I am sure many are playing it but how the hell do you set the dialog box (when you talk with others)? it's always minimized!!!!
