I'm using the Token iconset for the dock icons with AWN set to "none" for the style. Shell theme is Elegance Colours, + Faience Azur.

Themes are in the image (For Light, I use the version 2 of Nitrux, since I hate the new version 3. For Conky themes, they are Conky Light 4 Cores and Conky Dark 4 Cores. They come with the extra package of Conky Manager (http://www.webupd8.org/2013/07/conky-manager-gets-new-options-4-new.html), so I can't give you the source directly) As for the wallpaper, a kind UbuntuForums member whose name I forgot (sorry!) provided me with them months ago, so I don't know the source. This isn't Linux at all, it's actual UNIX instead, but I set FreeBSD up in Virtualbox and I've been playing with it. Currently got GNOME 2 set up on it, as GNOME 3 isn't officially available in BSD yet, and I have no idea when or if GNOME 3 will ever be available in BSD.

Infinality font rendering on openSuSE 12.3 must be one of the best looking font rendered system I have ever had the pleasure of working in, you really need to see it in action thus a screenshot does not do it justice, but here is an example:

Agreed. I even go as far as setting up an infinality repo if I install ubuntu, simply because that rendering system beats that of the other Os's. That said, I've been using XFCE lately and I love it:

KDE 4.11 has some nice refinements like for instance a new QML based taskbar which makes notifications work better etcetera. But just in general there is no other desktop environment that comes close to its 'cleanliness' and configurablility. Qt and KDE has really matured into superior API's.

Anyhow enough highly opinionated text, here are some screenies :)

I might have to fire up my VM of it to check out 4.11. I have continually (meaning, once every 2 weeks or so) tried to get on board with KDE, but it's insane lack of refinement (yep, I said it) gets to me. The clock text is misaligned and undersized, as an example. It's the little UI inconsistencies, coupled with the lack of being able to stream video over Samba shares (3 year old bug which has gotten no love) kind of bring me to this point. :(

That said, I'm firing up 4.11 as we speak. Crossing fingers...

EDIT - Ah, yep. No different whatsoever. Come onnnn KDE 5...

Same with me, I tried so many times to like the KDE because nowadays in features is the most complete DE out there, but that little things always drives me off. The "plastic" affect of the entire DE doesn't make my thing and why it comes with so many not cross-platform KDE apps that, at least for me are "bloatware" with soo many better choices out there, when I install KDE somewhere I need to remove almost all KDE applications and install the ones I really like :(

Its configurability is second to none yes, altough the plasma panel is very hard to configure.
When it comes to cleanliness I still prefer GTK/gnome though, however with gnome I dislike mutter (from an end-user pov), my ideal desktop would be kwin with gnome3/gnome-shell.
Still, kde has become a great desktop, QT performance is great also.

Hi, Tribes 2 was an awesome game! What was your favorite class to play as?

Anyhow to everybody dissing KDE, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. KDE works very well for me and more importantly it makes sense to me. It makes my computer feels like a real computing device that can be tailored to my liking. I don't have to install numerous plugins and third party apps just so that I may change my font size or choose which fonts to use :)

Also because I am a c++ programmer and use the Qt framework on some projects the fact that the entire DE was coded in this awesome c++ API is just a bonus.

But yes, that is the greatest thing about using Linux, choice. Choose to use what works for you and what makes sense for you. If it is open box great, I have seen some amazing setups using only OB, if it is unity, great also, it is a well thought out interface; same goes for GS, Cinnamon etc. Many talented people combine to write these amazingly cool opensource apps and desktop environments for us to use free of charge. Who am I to criticize their hard work?

Hi, Tribes 2 was an awesome game! What was your favorite class to play as?

Either low armored with a sniper and an energy pack (for capping flags) or driving a mobile turret/station and killing off enemies midfield in a heavy armored suit :P
Oh yes, and if you had a good team on a bomber you could really dominate the game :P
I really mis shooters like tribes (and rtcw: et or UT), moddingtools, dedicated servers etc etc: there are no games these days that have the same amount of options and playability.
Its probably because of all these console games where they can suck extra money from customers by removing stuff that always was a basic part of the game and sell it as dlc or "value" services.
These days I only play mmo's (wow and eve in my case), but I still hope there will be a new AAA shooter one day that will be on the same level as those games.

Very nice! What's the performance like? I've been eyeing up Elementary OS for a long time. I'm sure KDE fans who adore their endless menus and countless feature sets will roll their eyes, but dangit, it's time we have a braindead simple Linux distro in the house. Elementary OS fits that bill 1000x over again.

Once I get my office fully refinished and I have my work space back, I intend to toy with it. I'm confident it'll be at the top of my recommended distros, but I'd rather use it and see first hand.

Also, I got to wondering, is there a way to change the dock behavior? Let's say I'm not a fan of docks in general... what can an end user do to it? Can you manipulate it to look like a Windows 7 panel at all, or perhaps downsize it substantially to act/feel more like a bottom panel Unity-esque UI with small icons?

I'd be happy to, but there's some things you should know.

Due to the way I obtained my custom color changing bar graphs, my Conky requires you to...
1. uninstall your current conky
2. download Conky 1.9.1 source code
3. edit the fonts.c file to fix a "bug" that causes my Conky to crash
4. compile and install the Conky from the edited source code

You may find it easier to get someone else's Conky which uses LUA scripts to obtain the fancy bar graphs.

The VinDSL (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1771033) build can be made to look like mine pretty easily. The Hardy (http://www.noobslab.com/2012/07/install-conky-hardy-in-ubuntulinux.html) build is also a good simple config (minus fancy graphs).

If you are still up for it, let me know and I'll get my files together and post them sometime this weekend (less the email login info) with a short README (which I would have to write) to get you started in the right direction.

As predicted, mine has changed quite a bit in a matter of hours.

This is how it looks now:

It is a different install from yesterday as yesterdays install was lagging REALLY badly for some reason (I have an i7 3770 and 8GB ram with an SSD. It shouldn't lag...)

I am now on a full install of 12.04.3 with gnome fallback mode. Much faster!

Installed Elementary OS on a spare laptop I have...

For kicks I used some Ubuntu instructions to install kernel 3.10.9 and it worked here without an issue. I've also installed PPAs without issue. I am *really* liking what Elementary OS is doing. Even if you're an adept user, this is still Linux - just add what you need and the end result is everything you need with a simplistic yet decent looking UI.

This is a stock install. All I did was install the tweak tool to move the bar to the left and selected a darkish theme. That's about it.

I always keep an open partition on my systems so I can test other distros. I might put Elementary OS on that spare partition of my work laptop and see how it works.
