Hello recently i fixed up an old computer that had a virus so i completely wiped the hard drive. I decided i would try out linux for the first time on this computer so i loaded a ubuntu 13.04 iso on a flash drive. I put the flash drive in my computer and went to the boot menu. I selected usb drive and clicked enter. When the command dash used to be there is now a smiley face. The computer froze and now whenever i press a button on my keyboard another smiley face appears in the command line. Help me please i dont know what to do.

"...so I loaded a ubuntu 13.04 iso on a flash drive."

Did you just 'copy' the .iso file to the drive, or actually create LiveUSB? It sounds like you just copied the file, and that won't work.

Instructions for correctly burning a USB stick, and much more, are at this page: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop.

You'll need a working machine to do it, of course.

What exactly do you mean by 'old computer'?
Please give a complete hardware description.
