View Full Version : Question for any Shogi Players Out there?

Question about a vague shogi rule.
Our little pamphlet states two things:
1) a single piece may be promoted at the end of your turn provided it is in the promotion
2) [that] a piece dropped into the promotion zone cannot be promoted until the end of next turn.

Now, putting this into terms I understand (D&D), moving is a "Action", that a player only gets 1 of per turn, and promoting is a "minor action" as it were. So one should be able to move a piece then promote another (provided it is in the promotion zone), since promotions wouldn't be considered multiple actions in a single turn.

So, my question is this: if I were to drop a 'knight' in the promotion zone during my turn and on my next turn move a bishop, can my 'knight' still promote? Or do I have to move it?

I've seen more detailed explanations on shogi themed sites that don't actually state whether the piece to be promoted has to be moved or not.

[Addendum] Apparently a piece has to move into, in, or out of the promotion zone the same turn you want to promote it.
