I need to buy a new laptop. I was looking at the HP 4-1203sa which retails in the UK for 600 (US$900).

Specs here: http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/laptops-netbooks/laptops/laptops/hp-envy-touchsmart-14-touchscreen-sleekbook-4-1203sa-laptop-silver-m185-wireless-optical-mouse-black-red-pn908185-pdt.html

This is called a "Sleekbook" but my impression is (rightly or wrongly) that is part of the Ultrabook genre.

I have read a number of reviews of different Ultrabooks and many of them mention excessive fan noise. I would find this offputting to say the least.

What do people think? Does this model look like a sensible choice? Or would it perhaps have a noisy fan? All opinions welcomed!

Hi zozza.

I've never come across an hp with a noisy fan, maybe I'm lucky.

Your model has slightly better hardware than mine, which works very well for linux.

My wife just picked up an HP Envy Touch (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP---ENVY-Touch-Screen-Ultrabook-14%26%2334%3B-Laptop---4GB-Memory---500GB-Hard-Drive---Midnight-Black/6780706.p?id=1218807856258&skuId=6780706) about a month ago.

The machine is actually pleasantly quiet, even after a 2.5 hour session of Team Fortress 2. I'm actually fairly impressed with the little thing. Not sure about your upgraded model, but the HP Envy we picked up isn't loud at all.

Great little machine as long as you don't get me started on trying to get the WiFi to work with Ubuntu 13.04+.

It all depends on your definition of noisy. Got a Toshiba Portege Z830 ultrabook, now that makes lots of noise under load.

EDIT: So the Dell XPS15 (2011 ish) is significantly quieter than my HP dv6023 (2011) which is quieter than the toshiba ultrabook (I'm talking about when they're under full load).
EDIT2: @GawnSense have you thought of buying a different wifi card to put in it?

Well after dinking around with it last night, it seems the adapter ended up working on Raring after I upgraded the laptop from Precise. Definitely a relief, but probably might as well look into replacing the card to put into it.

Really happy with the machine now though that wireless is working out of the box on Raring.
