Want to remove XP and install Ubuntu 13.04 on Dell Inspiron 8500. I am able to make the WLAN work, fix boot errors, and load the driver for on board ATI Radeon 9000 video card. However, when restarted the laptop with auto login, I see the background but nothing else (launch pad, system bar on top, etc.). I am able to launch a terminal using "Alt+Cntrl+t" and able to do anything is the terminal. Funny thing is when screen lock timed out and I can see the prompt for password the unlock screen. Just not a single item on the screen other than the wall paper. I can even right click and change the wall paper and bring up the system config tools. Anyone knows a solution for this? I am kind of new with Linux and really appreciate some help to get over this problem.

so you installed ubuntu as your only os? from a cd or usb?
are you describing the process of installation? i'm not quite sure what
fix boot errorsmeans, can you elaborate?

possibly unity doesn't like your hardware.

try to boot into recovery or sth (when you hold shift during boot you get a menu). how does that work?

can you give the specs of your computer?

greetings,
