I have a dual boot ubuntu 12.04/windows XP on a Dell Mini 1010.
It automatically boots into the Windows OS unless I hover over the machine on startup to change to ubuntu using the keyboard - I find this annoying if I get distracted at the crucial moment ! Is there a way of changing the preference to ubuntu.

Is this a Wubi Installation ? If so, a Wubi installation uses the Windows boot loader and I believe you would have to make changes from the Windows side.

Not sure - I downloaded from the ubuntu.org site. Is it possible to tell?
If it is a wubi what do you do ?

Yes I have a wubi install - I can also see the ubuntu file on the install/uninstall program in the control panel which is good as I eventually want to uninstall ubuntu and do a clean install to remove windows xp.
But before then I want to continue with the dual boot to get to know this new OS
Also I have a link to try the Xubuntu - I assume I will be able to uninstall the X version from within Windows.
Which come back to my original question - how do I change the boot preference to ubuntu - have I missed something ?
Thanks - getting to know the system better - that's good.

For that you will need to change your boot order from within windows.
I would reference windows help sites to accomplish that.

added: I believe that it is only possible to have one wubi install at a time
(noticing that you may want to try other installs from within windows)

The first link I posted refers to changing the boot order for Wubi via Windows.
