When I use full screen in VLC, the panel is still present. How to hide it, its distracting?

When I tried
---'Don't reserve space on borders', its obscuring the controls on VLC when its maximized.
---'Automatically show and hide the panel' is tiring and not quick enough.

Is there a way to just make it disappear when applications assume full screen and present all the other time?

Using VLC I always use the just the letter "F" key for fullscreen which does get rid of the status bar and menu bar of VLC, both of which show if you use F11, and also the panel in my Xubuntu 12.04. I have no idea why this works only this works as F11 for fullscreen ought to also remove those items in my opinion, but it does not.

Not really fullscreen is it?

Strange but true (for me at least).

I am on Xubuntu 13.04.

Recently observed, when I double click on the screen or press 'F' when VLC is still UN-MAXIMIZED I get full screen. Any other scenario doesn't give a full screen. At least I got some solution. Wonder why this happens.

Strange but true, indeed.
