Hi

Is it true, that a 'quick' startup of Windows 8 x64 is it faster than Ubuntu 13.04 x64?
And what is memory usage after startup of both systems by default installation, I mean without any additional software like VS etc.?
Sorry to ask you, but I have a quite old hardware and cannot try to install by myself.

Windows 8 does boot much faster than xp or 7.
However it is nowhere near to ubuntu in terms of resource usage. It eats a lot of ram and cpu, which ubuntu does not.

A normal ubuntu system with lxde/xfce desktop would not eat more than 512 MB in idle condition. However windows 8 needs around 2gb for an empty desktop, that is no application running.

Windows 8 is nowhere near Ubuntu in resource optimization. If you want to an OS on old hardware, try lubuntu or xubuntu, they are lighter.
