View Full Version : Quick survey for all current/ex Ubuntu Linux users – part of a master's thesis, pleas

I am a student currently working on my master's thesis. This survey is crucial for my work and I'd be eternally grateful to all kind people, who could help me and fill it up.

The survey is short and easy and I promise it won't take much of your time. It's targeted at people who currently use Ubuntu (or used it in the past – had it installed or tried the Live CD).

You simply have to rate some features (1 being the LOWEST and 10 being the HIGHEST) and than answer a couple of questions. So, in a nutshell:

1 = very bad/unusable
5 = average
10 = flawless/excellent

Thank you very much in advance for your time and patience. :)

Here's the survey:

I've done it, but I think your survey is too superficial and inprecise.

For instance, with the "installation" question. Some people installed with the Alternative, others through the Desktop.

With the "What other operating systems have you used", you didn't actually list Mac OS.

For "How easy is it to install non-repository software", you didn't ask seperate questions for .debs, .rpms, binary installers/self-compilers, or source. I would have thought that these would be valuable questions to ask.

May I ask your hypothesis for this survey?

Yaho-o-o-o-! Congratualations, Dr. ... uh...well... ahem. I give this distro a fat and sassy 10! Maybe you would like a look at this (from a middle-aged housewife: Well, I guess no one will ever read this because the original is so old, but, anyway: You are so-o-o-o right. The average user of computers is way-way- way
behind times, even those who consider themselves "power users" are mostly not up to snuff. Here is an example: In 2001 I chose as a class project (1) installing a dual boot Linux; (2) configuring one hardware item; (3) installing one item of software not included with the distro. I was amazed at the reaction. People slid up to me outside of class and murmmered ominously, "Be careful! You might ruin your computer beyond repair!" My instuctor, supposedly an accomplished and informed computer specialist, told me, "Are you sure you wouldn't like to ammend this? Perhaps some other project would be more appropriate to your level?" And, of course, I heard, over and over and OVER again --- until I wanted to throw up --- the ever popular and eternal "Linux is not ready for the desktop."
I was able to give a presentation of the installation of Xandros desktop (the fastest installation of any Linux os --- and I have tried a dozen at least!) that was concise, detailed, and absolutely successful. I installed, successfully, Corel WordPerfect Office Suite; I configured my laser printer and printer, and (Gasp!) printed from it right there ... in the very classroom! GOSH!
You might think this made a big difference in the attitude toward Linux. Dream on, my sweet children! After the presentation, I was congratulated on my "bravery"; I was actually stared at! (Well, come on! This was a class where one student got an A for a presentation of choosing and installing MSWord!)
As we used to say, back in the old, old, old days, Linux has "a bad reputation"... you know, hangs out on street corners, goes for a ride with strange men and doesn't come home til 4 am. I don't know what to do a about it, but it's out there and that's a BIG reason people don't even consider Linux as an OS.

The final question really should have had an "other" category. I had no idea where to place myself. Clerical? Administration? Freelancer? None of those seemed to fit.

But, I did it anyways.
