PS4 OS runs on FreeBSD with GRUB bootloader: leak (http://mygaming.co.za/news/playstation-4-news/55618-ps4-os-runs-on-freebsd-with-grub-bootloader.html)

It's like Linux, but not Linux.

Interesting. And GRUB has the GPL license, so that means Sony needs to provide (a pointer to) the source code of GRUB, and other GPL parts in their PS4.

It's a very good move considering that Sony (like most East Asian companies) is not known for their software expertise. Might as well modify high quality software that has a permissive license.

OOOH! :)

Does this mean that we may get epic Linux ports in future as the developers of games can get it working on BSD? it should not be too bad to port it to Ubuntu/Steam!

was thinking the same thing, but more to the line - will PS4 games run on FreeBSD PC then? after all for example user friendly PC BSD is not a bad OS it just has poor hardware support...

but probably not- FreeBSD has totally different license than Linux has. so they can heavilly modify it and do not need to give the code away. something similar as Apple does. and as we know plenty of software that works on Apple (games, MS office...) does still not have a linux port.
