Is there a FOSS version of iTunes?

There are many independent labels that give out free music:
- http://www.allegro-music.com/labels.asp

Not sure how big is the demand for OGG or any other non-propriety music files, but there is demand for it:
- http://www.gizmodo.com/archives/open-letter-to-apple-ogg-for-us-please-015547.php

There are various independent labels out there so what I have in mind is a iTunes + Synaptic hybrid. Where you can add a repository/music server from various music labels to a source list. Ability to check whether there are new addition to the music server.

While a music file is playing. A URL to the label official website should be displayed + the song title + artiste name. If a user is intereted in buying a song from that label he/she just needs to click the URL. Clicking on the URL opens a browser redirecting user to the label online transaction website/portal.

Just whacky ideas, maybe someone already implement this. Then I apologize for wasting everyones time :)

Inspired by this snub the RIAA (http://www.kuro5hin.org/story/2003/10/22/02551/056) article.

Ooh! That's a great idea! Basically like online radio, only you're downloading it.

Ooh! That's a great idea! Basically like online radio, only you're downloading it.Yes, and also with the option to buy. The labels do need money too I guess.

So... nothing like streaming radio then

I think is should stream radio at the same time too. Imagine something like the current Rhythmbox. But not only you can add URL of radio channels but URL of music repositories (lack of any other better words).

Hmm ... I guess that's quite near to what Live365 does, isn't it? Playing songs and always have a "buy"-link in the player-window?

Refering to the post on Someone from Europe, tell me... WTF???? (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=22469) I must say that the "big-content" providers are getting too much. It seems there's not stoping their lobbying. I guess even the EU committee is not safe from them.

In the same thread, primeirocrime (http://ubuntuforums.org/member.php?u=9620) gave us a link to Xiph.Org Foundation (http://www.xiph.org/). And it shows that the groundwork and foundations are already there. We just need to support and motivate artiste (of whatever art be it music, graphics, short films) to release in free and open protocols.
