I love YIM. It's the best IM program around by far IMHO. The windows version that is. So I'm very sad that Yahoo hasn't developed its linux version of YIM, and it doesn't seem to ever want to. However, I found this petition asking Yahoo to update its linux and mac versions of YIM, and I signed it. I'm not sure if this would ever help, but hey, it only takes a few seconds to sign it. All you who love YIM can also sign it here (http://www.petitiononline.com/yahoo369/petition.html).

In the meantime, I found an IM program dedicated to offering most of YIM features for linux: GyachI (http://gyachi.sourceforge.net/) (fork of GyachE). I've downloaded it and installed it, and played with it for a bit. It looks promising, and has most of the cool features that YIM has, but not all of them. And I haven't tested it thoroughly yet for things like compatibility with my friends who use YIM 8 for windows.

Signed it... I find most Linux messengers aren't anwhere near good as Windows ones, especially when it comes to Video/Audio communication over the major IM networks ( one that that people actually use like Yahoo,MSN,AOL etc.).

Hopefully someone will retify this problem and soon.

BTW that GyachE project looks promising... All they need to do is tidy up their GUI and fix a few bugs.

I signed it too. I loved Yahoo! Messenger when I used Windows, even if it was so bloated. I use Kopete now and I only miss the microphone, webcam and radio support from Yahoo! Messenger.

Guys , People and Misses!! , We all need to understand that Gyache and Gaim and Kopete and any other Open Source IM there is isnt a replacement for Yahoo Messenger. Why should Linux users suffer ? Just because they are using a different OS than Bill Gates' Windows , doesnt mean they shud be neglected!!
So instead of switching to gyache or kopete or gain , people please sign that partition and let yahoo know!!
The folks at yahoo say that enough people dont use Linux!! So lets show it to them!!!!

what I really miss in linux instant messengers is the photo sharing feature in yahoo. and the file transfer, it's so easy (and you can simply drag and drop a 700 mb file in there and it will be transfered...)

Um, I thought Yahoo Messenger is available for Linux... if I go to their website (http://messenger.yahoo.com/), they give me a bunch options for downloading YIM for various distros, including a .deb file for Debian which I assume would also work in Ubuntu? (though I haven't tried it)

That thing is extremely outdated...I mean, look at the requirements:

Yahoo! Messenger runs on the Intel chipset and has been tested on RedHat 6.2, 7.2 and 8 and 9; Debian Woody

These packages require X Windows, GTK 1.2 or greater, openssl 0.9.6 or greater and gdk-pixbuf 0.8.0 or greater

Last time I installed it, I had to actually look for an outdated openssl in the repos...and that was in Breezy.

actually the ultimate move is not signing up a petetion online , in which i'm sure yahoo will never listen.
been there, done that, request have been made over the years. trust me petition is futile.

we all should use an open instant messaging network http://www.imfederation.com/

We can Communicate with Everyone

Able to Choose Your Software
