I've been reading alot about various distros out there, and learning up on Linux in general.

So far, I've considered Slackware, Blag, Gentoo, Debian, and now, Ubuntu. Debian had an awesome appeal to me, as did Gentoo for the configurability and choices offered.

Now, I'm not your typical computer newbie as I really don't mind putting in the time to research, tinker and learn about pretty much anything computer related.

To the point... does Ubuntu offer customization and more freedom as opposed to dependencies and bloatware a la Micro$oft? Also, I'm a gamer at heart. Does Ubuntu support my habbit? ;)

Anyone wish to mete out why they switched or are considering switching from one of the above listed to Ubuntu?

Thanks for the replies in advance.

First of all Gentoo is not for "newbies". Neither is Slackware [tho keeps getting easier] .

Yes ubuntu is VERY tweakable. Here are some of the unnumerable ways to tweak from screenshots of us, the ubuntu users. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=18430&highlight=current+desktop

For gaming check http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=18430&highlight=current+desktop and http://www.transgaming.com/latest_news.php .

Putting in time to do research, reading, taking notes of your hardware, and backing up data will save you many headaches and heartaches later on.

YOu made it look like we only have emulated gaming ?
What about freebie FPS like Return to castle Wolfstein:Enemy Territory or America's Army ?

BUt yes most of good 3d games are emulated, like freebie Anarchy Online or Warcrap 3 or my favorite: Valve games :d [counter strike] .

linux is an amazing system, gentoo and slack are not newbie but that not why i don't use them, they are too much, there only so much i think an os should ask of you to work and for me ubuntu strikes that balance well, i use linux for its amazing memory mangement , great filesystems (XFS) i never defrag, don't have, contant update and dev, ease of use and a the latest software, plus ubuntu great repository, the best in my view, you will realize shortly as i did that the time you put into gentoo is not worth what you get out in prerformance boosts, ubuntu's devs do a great job of almost gentoo speed, without the need for gentoo, and with the i686 kernel on an i686 system, ubuntu is faster then slack

as for games, there are enough that i am happy

Hey, I like warcraftIII! 8-[

Seriously, I have looked into Cedega and Wine and the like. I just don't like running graphic intensive games using a middleman software. Ah well, such is the current life of Linux.

Like Snoop Dogg would say: Paid Tha Cost To Be Tha Bo$$. We may lack in the game departament, but everything else is A+ .

Now keep it gangsta and come to linux.
