Unable to log in after software upgrades in 13.04

Evening all, I have just run the latest software updates in 13.04. However upon restart I can no longer get to a log on screen. I receive a message stating that my graphics card, Keyboard and mouse could not be detected correctly and I would need to configure them manually. It recognises an external KBD and mouse, however when cycling through the 4 options, it either hangs upon reboot or will not allow me to manually configure the machine. Any suggestions?

Try a recovery boot (Hold shift while computer powers on until you get a menu, select the highest recovey-mode option), and select "Fix Broken Packages" and then "Resume normal boot".
