Hi everyone. I have managed to switch to Gnome from Unity before using different methods and I would now like to do it again. The problem is there seems to be no definitive way of doing it and each method has caused me different problems. Can anyone point me to a tried and trusted method?

sudo apt-get install gnome-shell

You should now be able to choose a Gnome session from the login screen.

OK, well maybe I'm overs complicating things but from various things I have read I understood I had to install many other packages and remove many others. Or I could use something called Gnome Remix but both have caused me issues.

^^Gnome Remix only applied to 12.10.
Now Ubuntu Gnome is an official "flavor" as of 13.04 (and a great one at that.)

The above command will install gnome and its dependencies for you. It's fine to leave Unity on there as it won't affect anything. Just select a Gnome session from the login screen.

There are newer versions of Gnome available via PPA , but unless you are interested in testing new software use the command Cheesemill suggested.

That's great news, thank you both.
