I've googled and searched on and off for weeks, and can't find a way to set the defaults in nautilus 3.8.1. Specifically, I want nautilus to list files 'by type' (directories first, files later) for every directory. I can set them in the GUI, but they only apply to the current directory.

Solution?

Click Files in the top left corner of your screen and select Preferences in the menu that opens. You can set the defaults on that first tab.

Ahhhhh....bingo..I see the problem now. I'm using gnome-shell, and the 'files' menu for nautilus is no where to be seen. It doesn't get relocated to the nautilus window when using ghome-shell. WOW. Not sure that's a bug? So, logged in using unity, set the preferences, and back to gnome-shell and all is good.

Thanks.

To the right of the Activities button in the top bar is the Files app menu.

At least half the GNOME apps are using an app menu like that now.

Hmmm....not on mine!

(FYI, clicking on 'properties' shows the properties of the current directory')

Here's a screenshot so you can see what I mean by the Files app menu:

Ok, thanks!!! My problem was that I have a shell extension that hides the top bar except when using the hot corner.....and when viewing the overview pane, those menu's don't show up!!

Again thanks, now I see how to get to the menu...I have to temp disable my shell extension.
