View Full Version : [SOLVED] 12.04 update - Grub - keyboard and mouse freeze
Normand
June 6th, 2013, 12:10 AM
AMD 64 desktop machine with 12.04 running fine for the last 12 months
Install upgrade from 11.10. - not dual boot
Main hard drive 250G sda where the previous ubuntu versions are installed
Second hard drive sdb 1T storage with most of my data
Updates appeared on friday 31 May (did them on my AMD64 notebook)… I was away and on return did the updates to the desktop on Sunday 2 June
Rebooted and it got stuck in Grub … it would not load ubuntu and froze the keyboard and mouse
I tried to get acces from a live install pen … It ran from the pen
I found Boot-repair and now have the machine up again … but ..
It has done a new install on the sdb1T hard drive
I cannot access the original sda information
when it launches Grub … I cannot use keyboard or mouse (they freeze) to launch previous versions listed

I attach the records from the boot repair processes:
Initial repair attempt http://paste.ubuntu.com/5735297/
Repairing the boot record on sda http://paste.ubuntu.com/5746401/
Last attempt via Boot Repair http://paste.ubuntu.com/5746694/
I still cannot accesss the grub menu via the keyboard to choose where to boot

Normand; Hi !
Your "bootinfo" file... shows 3 hard drives on your system;
sda has ubuntu installed
sdb has ubuntu installed
sdc as the "data" disk...
You should have set the 1st boot priority as the first hard drive in bios... verify that that is so,
else;
what results when you depress and hold the shift key as soon as the bios screen clears ?
just try'n to help

Thanks Bashing-om
sda is original ubunto ... with I suppose previous versions stored somewhere
sdb is my 1T storage disk ... which Boot Repair kindly put ubunto on
sdc is the live pen with Boot Repair on it ... I take this out on re-boot to run ubuntu
pressing 'shift' in boot process does nothing
In the boot menu:
When I prioritise either sda or sdb it launches the same 'old versión'
- Although it says 12.04 in the launch screen and in System Monitor this seems to be confused with 10.10
- Places/computer does not see sda
- System Monitor somehow sees both sda and sdb
- System Monitor shows release 12.04 kernel 3.2.0-48 generic
- Update Manager says it is 403 days since last update and hangs up trying to find Meercat updates
Associated problems:
- keyboard blocked in the grub menu so I cannot launch other versions
- it wil not launch (does not see) alsa mixer

Normand;
Thanks for the clarification on drives...
So we want ubuntu version 12.04 on sda;
data only on sdb -- presently all I see is linux OS -> be prepared for bad news ;
and leave sdc out of the picture ...
Priority is to see what is on sdb drive...
boot the live medium, ->try ubuntu mode -> desktop:
key combo ctl+alt+t yields a command line terminal ->
terminal codes:
sudo mkdir /mnt/part1 #prepares mount point and represents 2nd hard drive 1st partition
sudo mkdir /nmt/part5 #sdb5
sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/part1 #mount the partitions to the file system
sudo mount /dev/sdb5 /mnt/part5 #sdb5
now lets look at what is on the second drive:
As a starting point:
ls -la /mnt/part1
ls -la /mnt/part5
when done looking about, (un)mount those partitions- keeps the file system from going insane and/or ballistic.
sudo umount /mnt/part1
sudo umount /mnt/part5
real aggravated ? Now is a good time to employ "testdisk" and see what can be recovered.
secondly is to get grub -12.04's version- installed onto sda -> when you are ready and willing,
we will proceed.
just try'n to help

Thanks again Bashing-om
So I've had lunch, got some relaxing music on, sitting comfortably and ready to go.
Writing from the affected desktop with a notebook running beside me if I have problems.
I have a live 12:04 pendrive and a live boot repair pen drive
More information for you before I start mounting and unmounting:
- sdb data partition is intact and all my data is there and accessible... it has always needed to be manually mounted after I launch ubuntu ¿**?
The boot record you see was recorded via the live boot repair pen ... so the sdb data partition was not mounted

Normand; Out standing in that "data" disk is intact !
Install grub - make sure it is correct version corresponding between the pen drive and the version installed onto the hard drive.
I am of a mind to do this in 3 stages;
1. install grub onto sda's MBR
2. mount and remove grub from the sdb "data" disk
3. update-grub from the sda install, as sdb's grub is gone will not be picked up on sda's boot code.
stage 1 : boot the live media -> CLI -> terminal codes:
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda
Done installing grub onto sda, unmount sda and move onto sdb; stage 2
sudo umount /mnt
sudo mkdir /mnt/part5
sudo mount /dev/sdb5 /mnt/part5
ls -la /mnt/part5 #to identify for sure the directories containing grub config files (/boot???)
sudo umount /mnt/part5
at this point I want to pause...any others input is welcome !
a) cannot "chroot"into sdb as no operating system is installed;
b) can not run normal "apt get remove grub" commands as will operate on the live medium
c) -> ONLY option I can see is to manually delete the identified grub directories and files present on sdb -
-----------anybody got a better method ?????---------------
stage 3
remaining to be done after grub is removed from sdb is to update grub on the sda install//waiting to get sdb's grub files removed.
what ever it takes to do it right

Normand; Oh My ...
Now I am completely confused... sdb has a complete operating system installed as I first advised... not just a "data" drive.
With that said... what do you want to do ? ..be able to boot either operating system ? Remove the OS from sdb ?
which way did he go, George
Normand
June 9th, 2013, 04:38 PM
Yup
In my initial post I said it has done a new install on sdb ... just running the 'Boot repair' tool - freshly downloaded
Though all the home data is old stuff from sda ... and part of the ubuntu version (a mix of 12.04 and 10.10???)
I would like to remove the os from sdb, update grub and system on sda
If you are confuse .... me much more so
I am just loading the live 12.04 Try Ubuntu and will pause there before anything else
Normand
June 9th, 2013, 04:46 PM
Aaaaarrrgggghhh
The live pen wil not do a Try Ubunto .... "Error - 0 Bytes left. Try removing files blah ...
I was beginning to get this a few days ago ... I had tried to do an update with the live pen trial!!

Normand...
Ok...I am getting more on track...
To remove the operating system on sdb... the easiest and best thing in my opinion... is to use GParted from the live medium - that we will have to work on before we can use it - is to delete the sdb5 partition. That gives "unallocated" space... and rather than chancing any corruption to any of the files present ..let us make a new partition on that "unallocated" space as a second "data" partition and in GParted ..give that new partition a descriptive "label" of your own choice. Format that sucker as "ext4" if only ubuntu is going to access the files stored on the new sdb5 ----uhhh--better look ...sdb5 normally means an extended partition, and no can mess with it 'till the "extended partition is dealt with !@
Looksee ! For a fresh update of data to work from.
From your install system on sda:
sudo fdisk -lu
making progress and in great shape for the shape we are in !

The Boot repair pendrive works live and has Gparted on it if that is a help
Bashing-om
June 9th, 2013, 06:25 PM
Normand;
This is a cause for great concern:
Partition 1 does not start on a physical sector boundary.
I know of no way to fix it with out a great risk of corrupting the files on that partition....If you can get your hands on another hard disk there is an easy way out of all this.
copy these backup files off to the other hard drive, and create a brand new partition table for sdb.
Else we can leave that partition hosed up///as a "data" partition I do not think it will adversely affect operations. Then if that is acceptable, go ahead and remove all the other partitions...getting us "unallocated" space.... make a partition in that un allocated space ... copy partition 1 to the new partition at a later time and redo partition 1 .....
for now we want the partitions containing the superfluous operating system gone
Do you have any experience at all using the partition editor GParted ??
Please take the time to read the help files.. once you have some experience with GParted it is a piece of cake... but at first it is very confusing !
This is how:
Fire up GParted in the liveUSB ->
upper-right corner of the display are listed the devices that gparted is aware of -> select "sdb"
-make sure device "sdb" remains identified as the 2nd hardrive we are going to work on in the "work" pane and the pendrive is not now seen as sdb --
we are going to delete 3 partitions sdb5, sdb6 (the logical partitions in the "container" partition sda2 that is extended) then the extended partition sdb2.
If you see any key icons in that display, means the partition is mounted... must be unmounted to be worked on, the extended partition may not be unmounted so long as any partition (swap in this case) is mounted -> right click on it and choose unmount.
in the work display right click on partition sdb6 -> select delete
in the work display right click on partition sdb5 -> select delete
in the edit menu select apply operations - best of my poor memory is what it is called
in the pop up re-affirm that you want to apply
wait for these two operations to be completed
in the work display now right click on sdb2 -> select delete
repeat from the edit menu to remove the extended partiton sdb2....
see the "unallocated" space in the work display that was just created ?
right click on the unallocated space -> select new
in the pop up options screen set an appropriate size for a new partition say 30000 (big !)give it 5MB space preceding the partition - allows operating room for working on the 1st partition later- check the box to allow it to "auto align" the partition, format set to ext4, and a label as "/data" the leading slash identifies this as a partition to everything that will relate to this space. apply ->pending operations;
And again in the edit menu choose to apply pending operations... and in the pop up ...apply.
at this time in the menus select "refresh devices" and verify what you see in the work display is but two partitions and unallocated space for future use !
let me know when you get this far and are all done to this point,,,, then we look at grub on sda !

I have an external hard drive for backups and will get all my data onto it first.
Then whatever is easiest to clean up sdb ... following your instructions with Gparted - I have used it a bit before.
... or if there is anything easier just to reformat the thing since I will have all the data.
Going for the data back up now - which will take a while. and will look back here shortly to see if there are other proposals before I go into Gparted
Thanks again for alll your time and help

Normand;
As you have your data backed up ...I done lots of typing -huh - for anothers' gain ...
yepper,,, much better in GParted just to choose device in the menu and make a completely new partition table, then select that unallocated space - the whole drive may be formatted into one singe partition .... might want to consider say 3 partitions to dedicate for particular uses and/or for isolation. I always want a bit of space (default 1Mb) between partitions; same for the start of the first partition from that sector boundry and allow the partitioner to auto align.
Before proceeding in this wiping out the present partition table on sdb ..... recheck, and check again that your backed-up data has indeed been backed up... happens may times where some one "thought" the data was safe, only to discover ...nope !
I am here and watching for your go-ahead ...in between responding to others needs.

Hi Bashing-om
Just to keep you up to date.
With the loan of an extra external hdd I have managed to back up 98% of data.
Some important music (2000 files) would not transfer because of having strange characters.
So I'm half deciding to try the re-partitioning method rather than the re-format.
But today has been full on with work demands and crises ... I can't see me having the relaxed clear space until tuesday am. i am in Barcelona Spain some 7 hours ahead of you. So I will come to it later.
Thanks again

OK I did all the Gparted stuff in your post number 18 - all fine.
I now have sdb with two ext4 partitions
- File storage .... with all my original data intact (thank you so much)
- /Data
and some unallocated space
I removed the live stick and rebooted.
It found the boot on sda and is up and running... 12.04 with an old version of my data (sda data)
Update manager still says it is 405 days since last update and seems to be looking for 10.10
This time I now have access to the keyboard in grub.
I will now try back in grub to see if I can find my up to date 12.04 version and sda data ... on the previous linux version .... and run an update from there
Normand
June 11th, 2013, 12:15 PM
The grub menu shows:
Grub 1.99-21 ubuntu 3.9
ubuntu linux 3.2.0-48 generic
then all the previous linux versions were on /dev/sdb so now are not available
ubuntu linux 3.2.0-45 generic on /dev/sdb ((versions back to 3.2.0-40 appear))
So I must have been running linux from sdb without being aware of it.... maybe since installing the second hard drive just over a year ago!
Trying to run update Manager it tells me

Normand; Making good progress !
Presently we are faced with two issues;
1) The data base for updated file acquisition
2) Getting grub updated
My priority is the data bases, to that end let us remove the sources for Mozillia/FireFox... can you recall why they are there ? As FF is fully supported out of the repositories ?I am not aware of a current need to resort to launchpad's ppa.
Post the output of:
cat /etc/apt/sources.list
ls -la /etc/apt/sources.list.d/
With the data base correct we can then get the files we need for grub's installation. I hope easily without resorting to purging the present grub. I have resorted to purging before... but that method permits no errors and NO interruption to power( kids, cats and thunderstorms), even that can be overcome !
Task at hand: fix the sources list.
I will be away from the keyboard for several hours, will check back in asap.
move'n on smartly

Normand; Ok I am back...
done a bit of research... mozillia on thunderbird is still supported... the "precice" entries you may untick.... we want the "natty" ones gone for good.
AND in the /etc/apt/sources.list FILE we want to "comment" out and/or remove one line.
Also prior prudent planning to make a backup of any file to-be edited first ...never can tell what might happen ...huh //
## or updates from the Ubuntu security team.
deb http://es.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick-backports main restricted universe multiverse
## deb-src http://es.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick-backports main restricted universe multiverse
the "maverick-backports", unless you have a real good reason to use the old archives, do away with it.
Do the above and should have the package manager ready for business//
Then fire for effect:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
When that runs good... gonna go grub'n
simple as falling off a log ..but, we want to fall to the right

Good Morning Bashing-om
done:
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
All fine, no problems. Update Manager is now happy. Now trying to recover audio ... following Sound troubleshooting threads.
On fire up this morning all the old grub lists for sdb have gone. Maybe this has sorted itself!
Questions remaining:
1. This is an AMD 64 system but the update listing (and when trying to repair sound) it is also loading i386 stuff. I had previously taken out any mention of i386 in the sources.list file .... but the system is still loading it in apt get update (for example). Not sure if this is creating problems.
2. The original "cause of the problem" in this thread .... that the system loaded and was running ubuntu on sdb (without me being aware of it) .. then the freeze up on the updates of 31 May. Not sure if this car re-occur.
Thanks again for all your help

Hi Bashing-om
In my Sound Troubleshooting. I tried most of the stuff in the two main guides, and:
1. I see there are some previous linux images being seen
2. Alsa is not finding/loading the driver for my sound card and I am getting:
p11-kit: couldn't load module: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/pkcs11/gnome-keyring-pkcs11.so: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/pkcs11/gnome-keyring-pkcs11.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I don't know if this is related to our work or if it is a general sound problem ... so I should take it elsewhere. I see this mentioned in launchpad themes .... but am checking with you before I go off on a different thread with other interventions.

Normand;
looking better all the time...
Grub...well like I said earlier, we can remove and purge all traces of the current grub install,,, and carefully (re)install grub. OR, reconfigure the present grub - in that you are booting from the hard drive and in bios set the hard drive as the 1st boot priority. Thus only sda boots in this instance. Then we can do the same for the external device, such that when bios is set to boot that external device, it will boot from sdd.
I can't say how smart your bios is ... All 3 of my systems I have bios set to boot from an CD, (lap-top from usb) as first boot priority, the hard drive where I have primary operating system installed onto is set as second boot priority... when I boot without CD (boot usb) available to bios, the machine boots the hard drive.
I386 libraries... welp, I would surmise that in the process of your sound trouble shooting and installs, there is instilled a dependency on the 32 bit libraries - what is not known at this time is if the appropriate libraries are installed on your system to run 32 bit application on 64 bit hardware. Looksee:
dpkg -l ia32-libs
Be advised I do not multi-task too well --unlike my operating system -- I function best one-thing-at-a-time with whatever has the highest priority and precedence> As this situation has nothing to do with the original nature of this thread, and detracts from it; Start another thread on the sound issues... will be glad to assist and appreciate a new learning experience.
What do you want to do ? I want to help -> booting ,to me, is always the primary issue.
we can do this

June 12th, 2013, 07:07 PM
Hi Bashing-om
Not sure what to do with the Grub stuff. Bios is set to boot from usb first and hard drive second. Now I am more aware of this stuff I will certainly pay more attention to what is happening there. If you think it is necessary to re-install or reconfigure grub for security ... then let's do it. But getting the music up is my priority since I work with this and need to get the sound running as soon as possible.
The i386 libraries hasn't seemed to be a problem. I was just checking with you to see if it might have been part of the original cause.
it seems not. Here is the result of your suggestion.
norman@norman-desktop:~$ dpkg -l ia32-libs
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Inst/Conf-files/Unpacked/halF-conf/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend
|/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
||/ Name Version Description
+++-==============-==============-============================================
ii ia32-libs 20090808ubuntu ia32 shared libraries - transitional package
So let me know if you think some final work on grub is required ... meantime I'll launch fully into solving my Sound problems.

Normand;
Start another thread for the sound issue... not a part of this current situation.
Fast fix on grub...no checking..should workie great and last long time:
Boot ubuntu by whatever means: unplug the usb device;
run terminal code:
sudo grub-install /dev/sda
not actually required but, want to look for errors; Do:
sudo update-grub
Verify !
Reboot -> bios set to the 1st (sda) hard drive boot priority;
ubuntu boots ->
rerun :
sudo update-grub##any old configs should now be removed
To confirm the installation had no error:
sudo grub-install --recheck /dev/sda
And I will meet you in your new thread and -get you back to work - (else PM me with info !)
merrily onward

Wierd stuff. I did your things several times. - and got the results below. Checked with gparted that things are as they should be and it looks fine as before.
Now I see "vmlinuz-3.2.0-47-generic" still there ... I wonder if my recent 'home' directory is there (somewhere) to be recovered. Normand;
The old "linux image"(s) remaining on your system in sda is normal... The system will not remove any old kernels, as never can tell when one may be required... as they are not required, at your (user's) discretion they may be removed... a topic for another discussion... general housecleaning is to remove all but the latest 2 kernels...(manually)
I would expect the 10.10 home to work just fine, just take a while to recover your files. I keep all my files anyway on separate backup - like you, so it is no big deal to go find what I need - when I experience those uh uh moments. Been there done that, do not want to lose my data again !
In respect to /home... what is the entry in /etc/fstab pointing to ? I mean does the UUID correspond to what you expect it to be as the wanted /home ?
Other than this ... booting fine and able to access your other drives ? looking good ?
are we there yet
Normand

Good evening Bashing-om
I don't understand what to do with your question "what is the entry in /etc/fstab pointing to ?"
But the home of 13 months ago is very different to the one I had a few weeks ago: Desktop, Downloads, Mozilla favourites, amule download files, .... have files and directories I deleted long ago and are missing lots of recent stuff. But I can live with this. When I have time and the relevant knowledge I'll try and keep a copy of this personal ongoing work on my datadisk
Certainly - booting fine and able to access my other drives with no problems - (Hug coming your way - if that is allowed in a serious ubuntu forum ;) )

Normand;
Old /home - new/home... It is possible that there does exist two "homes",, my question is what home is designated to be mounted in fstab (File System TABle)... Bit of poking about the file structure "might" reveal another /home. And if the present fstab entry is pointing to mounting the old /home, and there exist the new /home..... will be a simple matter to redirect to mount this fictional (present tense) /home.
sudo blkid
New error "b -src" -> educational foundations; The data bases controlling where/what the package manager uses for it's fetching is mainly in
the file "fstab AND the files in the directory /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ .... The present error directs our attention to the file "ubuntu-audio-dev-alsa-daily-precise.list" in that path /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ in particular is the line 2 in that file.
so fire up the text editor in admin mode;
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ubuntu-audio-dev-alsa-daily-precise.list and make the change to that first word as you have determined.
save and exit
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Normand; Hey,
I enjoy solving puzzles... -as well as the gratification of helping others - and before this one is done,,, let's make sure that the new /home is not found...
post the output of :
cat /etc/fstab
sudo fdisk -lu
so I am sure of where /home (which per blkid is in "/") points to .
then for poking around....try this:
cd /
ls -la | less
less is a paging file reader; page up, page down and "q" to quit.
ctl+alt+t activates another terminal with which to investigate suspect folders ie lost+found or another instance of home (there is going to be at least 1 home... if you see a second uh haw !
The command "cd" alone with no arguments returns the present working directory of the terminal back to your home directory.
clean'n up !

I just rebooted so as to try and go into recovery mode and root shell so as to look at lost+found ...
But once more the keyboard is locked when the grub menu comes up so I can't access it.

Thinking aloud - If I copy my (old - for what it is worth) home directory into the /data partition on sdb and do a clean install 12.04 onto sda might that just save a lot of work, time, stress ... very late nights for me .... and give us (me) a clean base from which to look at any arising problems?

Normand;
I am not at all happy with your "fstab" file ...but I have never used the facility drop box, and will take me a bit of time to figure out what is going on with it.... I have to be away for a few hours and I will return...
I responded to your launchpad entries... We are going to have to look into that /home situation for sure ... but let me get my personal things done,,, and I be back asap. It is of primary importance to me to get you up and back to work with alsa-sound... but got to get all the ducks in a row to have all files in place and with the correct access's.
Till fstab is good, this thread remains open.
we are gonna do this

Hi Normand.
It just happens the same to me, the keyboard and mouse got frozen in the grub menu, so once I was there I unplugged the keyboard usb cable and plugged it in another usb port, shutdown the system brutally, the menu poped-up again but now the keyboard was enable, so I selected the first option (run Linux generic bla bla bla) and that did the trick. Hope this works.

Hi Bashing-om
Dropbox is a kind of file sharing/storing cloud.
I have uninstalled it from this machine ... and also uninstalled various music editing apps not in use ... to clean up a bit. Reboot and redo the fstab.
The "Commented out by Dropbox " thing is still there.

It would seem to me that the 'grub' and 'home' and 'audio' issues are related.
As you might have seen on the launchpad post ... I got my audio back ... without the full control of pulseaudio
When I try and launch it , it suggests "Pulse-server in the Environment/X11 Root Window properties or default-server in client.conf is misconfigured"
In the Launchpad thread there is a suggestion to work on grub ... I haven't done this ... waiting for your view on that first

Normand; Hey !
I am back and been looking... To start with I do not know anything about "dropBox" and do not intend to be explicitly derogatory... I am concerned that "dropbox" has made changes to your system and without your knowledge or permission.
Linux [edit]In Linux, the ext2, ext3, ext4, JFS, ReiserFS, XFS, Btrfs and OCFS2 1.6 filesystems support extended attributes (abbreviated xattr) when enabled in the kernel configuration. Any regular file or directory may have extended attributes consisting of a name and associated data. The name must be a null-terminated string prefixed by a namespace identifier and a dot character. Currently, four namespaces exist: user, trusted, security and system. The user namespace has no restrictions with regard to naming or contents. The system namespace is primarily used by the kernel for access control lists. The security namespace is used by SELinux, for example.
Extended attributes are not widely used in user-space programs in Linux, although they are supported in the 2.6[1] and later versions of the kernel. Beagle and Dropbox do use extended attributes, and freedesktop.org published recommendations[2] for their use.
For ext2/3/4 and btrfs, each extended attribute is limited to a filesystem block (e.g. 4 KiB), and in practice in ext2/3/4 all of them must fit together on a single block (including names and values). XFS and ReiserFS allow attributes of arbitrary size.
There is some ongoing work[3] to support extended attributes over NFSv3.
Extended attributes can be accessed and modified using the 'attr' command on most distributions.[4]
That is in reference to your fstab and the user_attr attribute ! Seems to my mind (naive ?) that -that can wreck havoc with file system access. Now I imagine "dropbox" has to have that attribute in order to keep the update/status database correct... but !!
1. Permissions on your system appear to be messed up; and I can admit that finding and correcting these access rights are above my knowledge of the depths of the operating system. I can deal with the high level obvious stuff but ?? system wide ??
2. We do not know where your new /home got off to..where did the present old /home come from ? DropBox ???
In conjunction I want to know what is in the /lost+found/ directory.
do:
cd /
sudo ls -la /lost+found/
and post me the output.
3. We are going to redo /etc/fstab/ AND find that new /home.... failing to find the new /home and getting it copied into place... I strongly advise to (re-)install the operating system... with a standard stable system you may then make the additions with discretion and knowledge of what and why you are doing it and what the repercussions are. Now that said, if you want to try and fix some more and get your present operating system stable... I am all for it...As said I enjoy a challenge and a good puzzle !
There is great merit in dual booting, how bout when we get your "work"install all in shape; install 13.04 as your good ole standby that you will keep solid and stable for times like this... mess up "work" station and you are still able to run and perform with another OS is place. I would in that event put 13.04 on sdb separate and segregated... bootable with a change in bios boot order AND accessible from the "work" station on demand.
we can do this

I am sure that the current home is from the previously running 10:10 version that I upgraded in may 2012
And that the 12.04 home I had a few weeeks ago got trashed when we got rid of the linux partition on sdb
I am up for putting 13.04 on sdb
When grub launches the keyboard is still stuck ... so I'm unable to step down options. Maybe with a fresh 13.04 that will sort the grub thing.
But I am concerned that with the /home problem I am currently not able to access various things as root/admin (such as managing user accounts).
Might a dual boot just transfer this problem into the new install? Beyond me? Will this 13.04 on sdb have its own admin or is it dependent on what is already happening here?
OK ... re-reading your last lines ... we do this once we have the rest sorted. Sounds fine.
I am whacked and with a cold coming on. I have another 45 mins in me to do any inmmediate things ... and a long busy morning tomorrow.

June 13th, 2013, 11:56 PM
At this stage I have come to terms with losing the recent /Home and can lose most the 2000 music files that won't copy to the back up disk.
.... to do a completely clean install .... Leaving this decision til Saturday
Then keep Dropbox on my notebook which only ever has copies of some of my work ... so it does not matter if it goes funny,
I can clean install it without worry or loss.
Just thinking aloud. We have put a lot of time into this and it is nice to 'find' a solution ... but I need to rest and work ... I'm getting a bit stressed.
Bashing-om
June 14th, 2013, 01:01 AM
Normand; Being stressed and aggravated is understandable.
If we are going to fix your current /home... need to get the permissions and access rights in-line;
Fix fstab so dropbox is out of the picture
Then if and when the permission issues are resolved... try and get the alsa-sound to populate that directory (launchpad)(an access thing ?)
I see nothing in /lost+found/ to warrant looking further... the new /home as you say must be gone gone...
Permissions: show me;
echo $XAUTHORITY
ls -la ~/.Xauthority
ls -la ~/.ICEauthority
fstab:
Make a backup of the present /etc/fstab 'cause, never can tell what might happen
UUID=3d82fda2-a7b4-4bb2-b4b2-0334e9a039ab / ext4 errors=remount-ro,user_xattr 0 1
remove the "user_xattr" attribute... with out "drop box" installed, this may be driving the OS nuts !
Floppy disk: Do you really still have and use a floppy disk drive ? -just asking if that entry in fstab is still relevant.
And if you can not boot into your operating system, ask yourself if we are throwing good effort after bad ? Is it time to throw in the towel and just (re-)install...with care and attention we can (re-)install and never touch the data outside of the ubuntu install partition(s).
GParted is an excellent partitioner...confusing at first ...read all the help documentation anyway (again). For a production machine I like to set up with the partitioner "/", "/home" and "/var/" -- I do not advise a separate "/boot" partition. Now-a-days I think it beneficial to keep "/boot" in the root directory. And on this production machine I would strongly advise version 12.04 Long Term Support ..in the long term -stability-!
Your call, however, whatever and whenever.

Permissions/access:...all looks in order....will have to so some testing and probing to see where the fault (if any now ) lies.
After making the edits to /etc/fstab -> (making the edits and Rebooting) where do we stand now ? Able to boot from sda hard drive with no issues in the booting process ? OR ----

Hi Bashing-om
I haven't done anything new, so:
- This machine Boots ok everytime from sda.... no access to the grub menu - keyboard frozen
- in trying to do some of the sound troubleshooting things I get something like "You are trying to access a child which thinks you are not its parent" - permissions
- I cannot get root access to various things ... like managing user accounts - permisions
- I cannot get pulse audio working
- But the sound editor Audacity ... that I need to work with is functioning as are the other main programmes I work with
My mind is to do a clean install - soon - but my new notebook is trash - I got rid of win and installed ubuntu .... ran fine but having the keyboard/touchpad freeze occationally. I have struggled on with it thinking it was something with me and Ubuntu. Getting worse over the last weeks as my destop was having its problems. I have dedicated so much time to all of this (stressed). Only to discover this afternoon that it is the hardware. Luckily it is still in guarantee.
So I dont want to any changes that could bring down my main desktop without having access to the forums etc. and some of my basic work materials ready at hand on a portable machine.
Meantime I will get everything else I can onto the external drive.
Thank you so much for accompanying me on this journey

Normand;
Preamble: Be advised ..addressing your problems is presently my highest priority... the delay in communications is killing us. To that end,
below the forum main menu is a listing of all users presently logged onto the forum... When you have a reponse to my last ..and I am looged in..please feel free to PM me and advise you have an update.
Ok as to why you do not get a grub menu from boot-up... unless you have made edits to the default grub config files, that is the default behavior. In the "default" state with only 1 instance of an operating system installed; to get the grub menu -> as soon as the bios screen clears, depress and hold the shift key.
Keyboard: What keyboard are you using ? Sounds to me like what "might" be occurring is that the drivers for that keyboard have not been loaded and or initialized prior to the operating system coming "online". Like a race condition. Might do some cogitating on this and see about a module that we might explicitly load ??
Might take a gander at the keyboard setting (System Settings) and insure they are correct in respect to the keyboard you are using.
Else. plug in a good ole usb plain keyboard and see how the system responds. --We have diverted and talking about two different boxes, no ??)
And also> in response to your thank you... We are not alone in this ..the entire ubuntu community is at our back... the whole world is watching ! I am but the first responder.
Believe me ...we are all here to help !
In this regard... you are presently booting and there is no current issue with the booting into your ubuntu system ??
Then this thread should be closed... and I will assist you in resolving any other issues where my knowledge and experience can help IN other threads that you open....There are procedures to follow, that are inplace due to years of experience administrating this forum.
Otherwise, my focus on a problem is diluted and less functional... and my irritability is increased and I am distracted and distraught-> decreasing my ability.
what can I say admittedly
lamebrained, one thing at a time kinda guy

Hi Bashing-om
Sorry if I am slowing things down. We are on different time zones and I have had to lie down the last hour exhausted with the cold. Now feeling better.
Im not sure if I understand all your proposals in each post. i think I am doing them correctly but maybe I miss something.
I understand and respect the experience and procedures of the forum. Though I'm not always quite sure when something belongs in one or another place.
The Grub menu does come up on boot ... but I cannot step down it (say to rescue mode ... or another os if it was there) because it freezes the keyboard at that point.
Keyboard Logitech K120 usb, plugged in at the back.
In the original problem the system and keyboard stopped with the grub menu on the screen. And would not load ubuntu.
Now the keyboard is frozen when the grub menu is there ... it works at bios and after ubunto loads. Ubuntu loads with other problems
Bashing-om
June 15th, 2013, 12:23 AM
Normand; all is to the good - not counting colds !
A sometime thing with grub ....well let's take a look at the scripts that control grub... And let me tell you up front... my scripting skills leave a lot to be desired.... but I bet I can hack out a bit and see if I can see if there is a problem. So let us go one step deeper.
post the outputs:
ls -la /etc/grub.d/
cat /boot/grub/grub.cfg
And I also want to know that the file :
ls -la /etc/X11/Xorg.confdoes NOT exist.
I agree.. getting ubuntu to boot each and every time is the highest priority and will keep this thread open until it is resolved.
Keyboard: so far as I know Logitech is well supported by ubuntu ... What we can do is look at the log files and see what is reported at the time that the keyboard is not responding. This will indicate where to start looking. Log files can make very interesting reading, a bit dry though (lol).

Bashing-om
June 15th, 2013, 01:34 AM
Normand; Ok ...
I see no fault with grub.cfg. Nor anything strange in /etc/grub.d/ .....
As there is no floppy disk on your box.
a) disable floppy drive "seek" in your bios !
b) edit out the df0 line in /etc/fstab I ain't got a clue where that could have originated from ! -- by the way if my use of American "slang" is a problem ...I am sorry for the miss-communication... I will adhere to accepted grammar.
Presently in /etc/fstab all we need to boot is "/" and swap, I have verified the UUIDs as properly corresponding.
And now a biggy ... as I can find no major fault... I want to remap what the operating system sees for devices (partitions) in accordance with what bios has mapped. There very well could be a difference now resulting from all the changing that has transpired... do :
sudo grub-mkdevicemap will be good as sda is the only booting drive on the system.
Now (re)boot a few times ... and advise results.
that is what I think

Done three reboots:
in the first I checked the BIOS priorities again:
1 - USB
2 - CD/DVD (I don't have cd/dvd onboard)
3 - HDD
4 - removable Dev (????)
I cannot see how to "seek floppy" ... or disactivate those irrelevant boot sources
It is a Wolfdale 1333-D 667 P1-40 BIOS
All the reboots went well. The keyboard was not available in the grub menu in any of the reboots

Normand;
I don't think you are looking in the right place to disable the floppy disk ... I am running "award phonix" bios ...will reboot and look where it is located in my bios...
Do you have access to another keyboard ? just for a fast means of trouble shooting ... spare that board off to another.
And on "another thread" will have to look at why

Normand; I am back...
ok, my Phoenix bios : -> advanced bios features -> boot up floppy seek -> disabled.
On the admin access... we will have to look at the sudo user files and the groups that have access to admin privileges.
As it is past time in your time to retire, and you are "tired" will await a more opportune time to look at the logs and see what they say about the keyboard issue.
eventually, it will all iron out

June 15th, 2013, 03:22 PM
Normand; My morning to ya !
Trust you are feeling better, I am almost awake... so here goes.
I do not recall anything in the grub.cfg file in regards to floppy seek, please show me the relevant portion.
Keyboard: Racking my brains .. admittedly, I do not understand.
keyboard is recognized by bios, now not recognized by grub (where formerly it was), and I will assume that the kernel loads a driver for the keyboard such that the operating system now recognizes the keyboard....All I can think of is something in bios affecting the keyboard has been changed - I can make changes in my Phoenix bios to the affect -. // Besides setting the boot priority and maybe "floppy seek" what other changes have been made to bios ? What I have in mind is to reset bios back to the default values ,re-boot. then reset the boot priority and re-boot again. See if bios will hand off to grub it's keyboard settings.
Permissions:...let's look and see that all agree:
id
groups
sudo -l
ls -l /etc/sudoers
ls -l /etc/sudoers.d
sudo cat /etc/sudoers
We are entering dangerous waters, tread lightly and from hence forth be very aware in the event intercession is required.

note that "27(sudo)" is non existent in yours; hence permissions issues.

If /etc/sudo.conf does exist, sudo may be configured to work in a radically different way. (Or it might be configured to work exactly the same way, and have nothing to do with your problem. Or anything in between.)
ls -l /etc/sudo.conf
To check for a possible pam problem, run:
ls -ld /etc/pam.d
ls -l /etc/pam.d/sudo

same for the scanner line.

I have spent hours trying to track this down....and it always seems to come back to the permissions on the home directory.
Let us do this:
ls -l /home/
ls -l /home/norman/
sudo chown norman /home/norman
ls -l /home/ ##to see if the permissions change
ls -l /home/norman ## again to look at the permissions
sudo chmod 777 /var/lib/alsa/asound.state
alsactl store 0
sudo chmod 644 /var/lib/alsa/asound.state
Now fire up pulseaudio and see if it works with out that "Home directory /home/norman not ours" hitting us in the face.

Update on what is working and what not:
Keyboard access as before: works in BIOS, blocked in GRUB, works fine in Ubuntu
In Grub menu only the most recent linux version is visible (with rescue version and memtest lines), but no keyboard to step down and access them
GRUB boots fine into Ubuntu each time
PulseAudio: is installed but not running (alsa is working)

I just re-ran these previous commands to see where we are. Still getting "Home directory /home/norman not ours."
It does open gedit (I did not change anything in fstab).
I can work with the machine as it is right now. Though there are these strange things happening. Only worry is that if there is something not right here then any next update might knock it out again.

norman...
As I continue to try and comprehend... all I look at says there should be no problem, there is !
This is not in accordance with what I have in my research:
norman@norman-desktop:~$ ls -l /var/lib/alsa/asound.state
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 17 May 1 2012 /var/lib/alsa/asound.state -> /etc/asound.state
Perhaps I have been looking at old antiquated information ... this is a link from where I expect the config file to be, to a different location... I am working on a link rather than the file and maybe the operating system is doing the same ??
Or perhaps - likely - alsa has changed since then and the config file re-located to /etc/ is correct ?
Will see what I can find out about why when where that symlink was instigated - never seen such in all the docs I have thus far encountered !
Thanks for the updated status, response; nothing was out of order with permissions in the /home directory, nothing changed or fixed.
Next I must come up with a test to probe where the problem might lie. Everything is right, but somewhere something is wrong !
what to do, oh what to do.... I be thinn'n, see what I can come up with for "probing"
I do not know, but I can find out

Norman: There is a fly in the ointment !
Ok, I just looked at "/var/lib/alsa/asound.state" in my 12.04 install ...guess what ?...That file exist where it is supposed to be ! ...Not as a symlink.
As NiKTh is actively working this issue, and I have confidence his knowledge is greater in this respect than mine; Bring this situation to his awareness. I will await his advisement on how to correct this issue.
Old images: to remove with synaptic (preferred method) remember to run "sudo updrade-grub" afterward> keep the present kernel and the one under it !
The command uname -a in a terminal will tell you which kernel you are running....then:
Go to Synaptic Package Manager select status on the left-lower pane and select installed on the left-upper pane and search for linux-image.
select the ones you want deleted. listed in the right-upperpane.
and mark for complete removal.
Click the Apply button in the toolbar and then Apply in the summary window that pops up. Close Synaptic Package Manager.
sudo update-grub
In addition to linux-image, also remove old versions of linux-headers and linux-restricted-modules (if you have them).
Don't forget ! In terminal run "sudo update-grub" to update the config files.
gone back to this permissions issue -> later

On the keyboard not working with grub, have you checked BIOS settings. I had exactly that issue with my BIOS and it reappears if I update BIOS as it reverts to defaults. There is a setting for USB keyboard & mouse that must be on.

Norman; How about the crash course in computer science you are experiencing !
See oldfred's directive last.

Edit: what paths are established ?
echo $PATH

I have removed two linux images but not sure how to "remove old versions of linux-headers and linux-restricted-modules".
These were 3.2.0-23 and 3.2.0-24. Now appearing in Semantic- three images. Not sure if I have to remove one of these ... or which:
linux-image-generic 3.2.0-48.58
linux-image- 3.2.0-47-generic 3.2.0-47.72
linux-image- 3.2.0-48-generic 3.2.0-48.74
In between 3.2.0-24 and 3.2.0-48 there were several others which I "removed" about 6 weeks ago ... I don't remember how, but not in Semantic.!!!
sudo update-grub and then reboot. Grub only shows the one image.
norman@norman-desktop:~$ uname -a
Linux norman-desktop 3.2.0-48-generic #74-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jun 6 19:43:26 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Norman;
Old kernels; the procedure to remove the linux-headers is the same as removing the linux-image. In the search box put "linux-headers"... Linux-restricted-modules; very likely you have none installed, thus none show up.
To see what is on your system:
dpkg -l | grep linux-image
dpkg -l | grep linux-headers synaptic should show same same !
It is perfectly acceptable to use other means to remove the old kernels, synaptic is the more visual to preclude errors.
Permissions: No fault found as usual... stonewalled as nothing I look at is amiss ..still looking for a means to test and probe for something "not right". At least we know all is right with what the system base is. Never seen nothing like it in my life !
As "gedit" is hollering... let's see what the assigned permissions on "gedit" are:
ls -l /usr/bin/gedit

Norman; Hey;
The "rc" means the package has been removed, but config file remain... uh huh, ... you did not think things through !
Fix:
dpkg --list |grep "^rc" | cut -d " " -f 3 | xargs sudo dpkg --purge
To remove the old linux-headers packages, still prefer synaptic -complete removal takes care of the config file removal also.
Just make sure you do not remover any header files (version to version comparison) for the corresponding linux-image files.
Also for self assurance one can always look in the /boot partition (directory in your case).
sudo update-grub
ls -l /boot I still recommend synaptic ... but if you want the "correct" command to properly remove old images and headers, I can do that too.
it is all a learning experience

Normand...
All the "locked" means is that there is another instance with the package manager already in progress,,, as in apt-get, or dpkg, or synaptic,,, close all of them out and only activate one of them at any one time.
And I messed up ... not proof reading enough on my last,,, should be:
ls -l /boot will correct my former post.
ain't nothing but a thing

I have searched all over my BIOS and, as far as I can see, there is no setting for USB keyboard & mouse ... or anything similar.

Normand,,, well
I did not expect any change with purging the old kernels from the system as they are not loaded and have no context.
However, on the permissions thing... out of curiosity and maybe a pointer, take a look at:
cat /var/log/auth.log and see if there is anything there of interest.
Still focusing now on this as application specific, at some point.
it's in the process, somewhere

I continue to investigate gedit's conditional issue. Continue to look at it as application specific and do not want to take a shot gun approach to it:
1. I do not know what the effect on your personal files will be if we were to "remove and purge" gedit ;
2. gedit can be deeply ingrained into the operating system, if we were to remove purge and a power failure -or reboot - or lapse in memory - were to result prior to (re-)installing gedit -- that might really throw a wrench in the works ! ;
If you want to take the time to look at gedit's files, I am all for it ...there are hundreds of files assosiated with gedit, Woking through these files may be a nightmare, though at a glance most are icons and themes.
3. Doing a wholesale (re-)install will likely resolve the issue ... but we learn nothing from doing so.
That is were I am at
where are you coming from ?

Hi Bashing-om, good evening to you too
I'm happy to look at gedit files if it contributes to the greater knowledge. I can't dedicate so much time this week since I'm preparing for a big training weekend.
But I can keep with it between other things.
It also occurred to me that there might be some clue in the updates that were released on 31 May and that were the trigger for all of this.
I don't know what they were but I'm sure there will be a record of this somewhere on Ubuntu.

Norman..
OK ... give me some time to set up the file -> data base in my 12.04 install and xfer these back to my "work" station. I will advise you where to start when I know more.
apt-get update file: good thinking on your part... that file does exist,,, right off the top o me head I do not know where it is ... will find it and we can take a gander at what it relates.
take care 'till then

Norman; hey ...
When all massaged down from the list file ...this is what it boils out to as files of interest. Use "ls -la <file_name>" and compare your output's file permissions to mine. The first entry in "root"'s directory requires "sudo" to list it.

Norman; Hello !
I have not forgotten about this ... Just remain stonewalled, My last idea to see what gconf ->gedit related; well led nowhere too.
To this time I have not come up with a method to test and probe to see where the root of the permission issue lies.
I do not think this will tell us anything more, but wont hurt to take the time and look:
cat /etc/passwd
stat /etc/passwd
sometimes I wonder, other times I just do not know

Good Evening Bashing-om
I've had busy days with my work. Here are the results to your instructions.
New information ref Grub - this morning there was a new linux kernel to update. I did the update and rebooted.
Grub menu only shows the current linux image and its rescue version. Does not show older versions ... the one that was there yesterday. Sure it is still on the machine but the Grub menu does something!!!
And the keyboard still blocks at that point.

Normand;
Still nothing to point a finger at IRT permissions...should workie, but does not in all cases !
New kernel/grub ... the old kernel would have been placed in the sub folder "advanced options" menu selection and bet it is there,
Did you ever investigate oldfred's advise about looking into the bios options for the keyboard ... As I have said I run "phoenix" and in my bios I must -to the best of my memory - set two options or maybe three:
os2 = no
PnP enabled = yes
...ahhh I can not recall what I did for specific on keyboard, I run an old ps2 keyboard ...good one and I like the feel of those old keys... on this system... On the wife's 'puter is also phoenix bios with a logitech keyboard.... when I can I will look at that bios also and see how I have set it up.
off to la -la land again see what I can find ... I will return

I have no doubt the old kernel is there ... only I thought that the Grub set up should show it in the menu when it comes up (or maybe it is different now. I hadn't payed it much attention until these last weeks).
Following oldfred's suggestions I searched all over my BIOS ... no keyboard options
Bashing-om
June 19th, 2013, 09:35 PM
Normand;
Don't know what can be said about the keyboard... Bios brings up and checks out the hardware, hands of to grub to get the OS up and running.
Bios recognizes the keyboard, grub does not and the OS loads up an appropriate driver to deal with the keyboard .. and all is then good.
The keyboard is a usb device.. might I offer that you play with the usb settings in bios ...make careful note of the various screens you are in and what options in that screen are changed.
What bios and version are you running ? I will try and locate the manufacturer's manual on line and see what I can determine.
when all else fails.....read the instructions

The BIOS is: Wolfdale1333-D667 P1-40
From my deep ignorance I see things with GRUB (1.99-21 ... 3.9):
- this is where the keyboard does not work
- it does not show the previous linux images
Trying to explore and understand theGRub manual and I'm lost.
I don't know if there was a GRUb update when the issue began to appear - May 31
I hesitate since my ignorance often being the source of any problems

Normand. Awareness of ignorance is the first step in learning !
None of us were born knowing what we know. It is a process.
ubuntu is a great experience in learning as with good backups and a liveCD, any errors/mistakes can be corrected !
Grub menu ... I have heavily modified my boot menu so do not have a means to verify... but to the best of my memory there exist an item on that grub boot menu "advanced options", within this sub menu are all the older kernels. As you only have one operating system I expect that you will only see one boot kernel option. Until your keyboard is functional within the grub menu you can not access this sub menu. Let me see what I can find with the info provided 'bout the usb.
I'll be back

Normand;
Here is my reference:
http://download.asrock.com/manual/Wolfdale1333-D667.pdf
In your bios is a "usb configuration" page. From the manual section 3.3.8 and set:
usb controller -> enable
usb 2.0 support -> enable
legacy usb support -> auto
I suggest make only one alteration from what is presently set (note what is presently set) If required make the change, save that change (write change to cmos ??) and exit ...reboot ...let the system boot to grub menu ...keyboard work ?
No ? then repeat with the "usb 2.0 support" option ... write changes to cmos
last check "legacy usb support"...
I hope this helps
Normand
June 20th, 2013, 10:49 AM
Bashing-om;
My bios - "usb configuration" was:
usb controller -> enable
usb 2.0 support -> enable
legacy usb support -> disable
changed legacy usb support -> auto
and the keyboard works perfectly. I can step down the grub menu.
Sorry for not seeing this clearly myself and for dragging it on.
I would declare this solved. I will take the PulseAudio back to the sound people on launchpad, later when I have time.
Very many thanks for your diligence and patience, and to oldfred for the pointer.

Normand; Hey ... That is indeed something good to report.
And Yes, I agree that this thread should now be closed -> and -> open a new one in respect to the permissions issue we have been going round and around with.
I still have nothing new to add ... opening a new thread will give visibility to this issue and I hope others can give guidance to how to further trouble shoot this.
Quit is not in my nature, back up, regroup and find another avenue of approach !

Hey, we are all in this together ! You have come a long way in "domesticating" your system and I trust I have been instrumental in your continuing contributions to the overall movement.
I hope to catch you in the other thread.
