Ubuntu 12.04 on AMD 64 bit processor.
I'm starting a Coursera course which uses DrRacket as programming language. I downloaded the appropriate self-installing script from the course page and installed the program in /usr/bin. I can start the program by going to the drracket script in the /bin subfolder of the drracket folder. When I do this the program starts up and I can use it; the icon of the program appears on the launcher, and I can click on it and select "lock to launcher", but if I shut down the computer (suspend does not seem to work on my machine) and restart it the icon is gone and I must start it up by hand again. Any suggestions?

See the link , I use alacarte, but don't know if that will work with your application. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UnityLaunchersAndDesktopFiles
