Ubuntu Gnome 13.04.

1st screenshot: with bottom panel, dash to dock extension, and applications menu for a more classic style.

2nd: Default Gnome setup but with Applications menu, Places menu, and Weather extension.

I think I still like the second setup better because it's cleaner and works great for me, but it's good to know I can get a more traditional setup too.

...No one really knows, how water goes up to the ponds on the top of the rock...

It looks like an interesting place.

Even if the water isn't pumped to the top or brought by precipitation, I am not surprised to see water there. Have you ever wondered how water gets from tree roots to the top of tall trees? The answer is most likely the same for both instances: Capillary Pressure. If the rock under the palace is formed from porous rock or even a non-porous rock with micro-fractures throughout (which may be expected on an ancient volcanic island). The attraction between water and the narrow pore channel walls can easily provide enough force to lift water vertically many hundreds of feet.

The same principle is utilized by trees; water is propelled upward due to an attraction to the walls of the small spaces/channels between the plant cells.

Perhaps you should rephrase your statement from "No one really knows how..." to "Most people don't know how..." or maybe even "Most people don't care why..." :D

Now you know, and knowing is half the battle.

It is a rock, but not a porous one, 200 m above the ground level. Everything had been done more than 1500 years ago. There had been large buildings on the top, now only ruins are left. Lot of scientists still trying to find how some of those structures had been constructed there, including the many massive ponds. I've not climbed it yet, but I will one day. Hope you guys would have chance too.:)

Never thought that I would become a Unity lover but that is just what happened after giving it a fair shot! I am using an elementary theme, a wallpaper from interface lift, custom icons from various websites and used "myunity" to tweak transparency on the panel and unity bar. Oh, an I use Ubuntu 12.04 x64 as my main OS :)

Since I have a laptop to spare I've been tinkering around with different distros. I tried openSUSE, but it was a pretty meh experience. I fired up Debian Wheezy but I had a hard time getting excited with it when it's already packing slightly older software, which of course won't change throughout its cycle unless I start enabling some repos. In an effort to find an alternative distro to my main Ubuntu choice, but wanting a Debian base, I went with Linux Mint Debian Edition. The semi rolling cycle (instead of true rolling, it comes out with 'update packs') is extremely attractive to me. Plus, Mint actually does a very, very nice job with the Cinnamon environment. Rocking that now. Part of me can't help if it'll make its way onto my main work laptop...

I also intend to put another SSD in my Lenovo to swap out my Ubuntu install, since my Ubuntu install is currently suffering from this bug that I reported - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1188774

A little project I'm working on...

I use Kali at work for pen-testing so I thought I'd create a hybrid with my favourite lightweight distro #!.
The result is basically CrunchBang built on Kali as a base instead of Debian along with a custom Openbox menu for all of the Kali tools.

The installed version is working fine, I'm just wrestling with the Kali build scripts at the minute to try and produce a live version.

Another Arch Linux screenshot. Arch is my primary Linux, though I still always come back to Ubuntu. And I'm still running KDE as my primary (well... only) desktop environment. There really isn't much different other than the wallpapers and themes, this time going back to a Legend of Zelda theme. And just like with Ubuntu and pretty much all the Mac OS's, I use a global menu in the top bar. Granted, it took some effort, but all my apps (gtk and qt alike) use the global menu just fine. No segfaults, no glitches, none of that.

Computer: Desktop
Distro: Arch Linux
Desktop Environment: KDE Plasma 4.10.4
Plasma Theme: Air (default)
Window Theme: Oxygen Transparent (from AUR)
Color Scheme: Oxygen White & Gold (modified from Oxygen)
Left Wallpaper: stock Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword (don't remember where I got it)
Right Wallpaper: custom-made Legend of Zelda "Skyward Sword Romance" (16:10 version)
Icons: Oxygencolors v6.3 (Yellow Glass color)
Dock: Docky ... features include: Anchor logo removed using gconf, Custom launchers for Homerun Launcher, Plasma Activities, and Dolphin... all with custom icons, all pre-made before dropping into Docky
Special Features: Dual displays, Homerun Launcher, Global Menu

The more Gnome Shell grows, the more I love it.
The more crap that is shoved into Unity via nonsense lenses, the more I dislike it.

Rocking Ubuntu GNOME 13.04 with Gnome 3 PPA @ 3.8.2. Absolutely freakin loving it. Stays out of my way when I need it to yet it also gets in my way when I need it to (via it's awesome message tray and notification system), and is all around quite a joy to use.

http://i.imgur.com/qdAgIRC.jpgMe too! The first time I tried it my thought was "okay, it looks nice, but I'm not sure if I'd want to use it all the time." I kept playing around with it in a live session, then eventually installed it. At this point, it's my favorite DE ever. It's very good for my work flow, gets out of the way when I need it to, is plenty customizable, and looks awesome. I can't speak for Unity as I haven't had any reason to try it recently, but the things I originally didn't like about it haven't changed. So anyway, here's my current desktop. Nothing too fancy, but the wallpaper does change to a different random photo of mine every 60 minutes.

Ubuntu Gnome 13.04 with Gnome 3.8 PPA. I have the applications menu, places menu, and weather indicator installed.

And here's one from Deepin on my Distro Hoppin' partition. Doesn't look as if there's a whole lot of customization possible. So far, the wallpaper is about the only thing I could change. Doesn't look like its (easily or straightforwardly) possible to change the garish icons. I picked a desktop to counteract the onsalught of pastels.

http://poemshape.files.wordpress.com/2013/06/thumbnail.jpg

To see a larger image, try here (http://poemshape.files.wordpress.com/2013/06/deepinscreenshot20130621095225.png). I would be possible to add conky, I suppose. The desktop, because it's so simple, is very responsive and very light weight. All in all, sort of a cross between Windows 7 and Elementary(?) If you want something simple and lightweight for a former windows user (who never tweaks anything). Deepin might be a good choice? EDIT: Right now it's cruising at about 180 megs/32 bit -- almost as light weight as #!.

An other observation: Unless the panel is auto-hidden, the icons (extending above the panel) effectively make the panel twice as wide (as far as apps are concernerd). It means that the panel, though it looks small, eats up a lot of real-estate. The only way to use the DE on a small screen is to auto-hide the panel.

I'm afraid, if I puke a fan, it'll fry the chip before I notice it. Had it happen to my previous (ATI) video card.

Here's how paranoid I am...

Wow! Mind-blowing, beautiful desktops posted here!

I really like Irene's style (fog) and Vermont Poet's, too. Now I'm jealous and want/need to learn how to customize the look of my icons. ;)

Now bear with me as I try to post a decent thumbnail of my own screen shot of computer desktop.

I use Ubuntu 12.10 + XFCE desktop environment = xUbuntu.

It currently looks like this:

Another screenshot... different distro:

Full-size screenshots here:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v245/viperdvman/Screenshots/ScreenshotMintDebi1.jpg

I'm running a different secondary distro now alongside my primary Arch Linux. I've always liked Linux Mint and would've chosen it as my first Linux distro had I not already chosen Ubuntu. I wanted to go with a Debian base as my secondary distro, so it was basically a tossup between two excellent Debian-based distros... Snowlinux and Linux Mint Debian Edition. I could've gone with SolusOS, but the new version is still in the alpha stages. So having always liked Linux Mint, I decided to go with Linux Mint Debian Edition. I haven't modified Cinnamon very much at all. I decided for now to stick with the traditional Windows-style interface, and I've only modded my Cinnamon theme and wallpaper. I'm sticking with a Legend of Zelda theme for now, but that could change. And the default Mint-X themes work very well with this wallpaper and the Legend of Zelda forest theme. So far, it's almost every bit like running the main Ubuntu-based edition of Linux Mint, and I'm very much enjoying it. Good thing I won't have to reinstall it in the future... the beauty of rolling and semi-rolling releases.

Damn - the app icon in the Shell panel never really impressed me, and mono icons don't read all that well, but the mono icon for Chrome in the panel looks really surprisingly pretty.

Without the fade effect on the icon, though, the overlapping text looks weird. = /

I'm actually using the Chromium Canary 29 trunk build (unstable/untested dev release).

Heh! When you're rolling on the ragged edge, the line between Chrome and Chromium become blurred.

I suppose that's a Chrome feature, not properly implemented quite yet.

Never thought about it, until you mentioned it, but you're right. It does look odd, in a surprisingly pretty way.

Anyway, if you're feeling lucky, you might want to try Chromium 29...

They just redesigned the page I linked to -- hasn't been changed in months.

They've added a clickable download button that uses the same graphic (with properly spaced text).

I recently decided to give rekonq a go as my main browser and must say I enjoy it. It is stable and fast, and what I enjoy most is the little preview you get when you hover over a tab like in the screenshot:

The little puppy following is... well... Puppy Linux:

http://poemshape.files.wordpress.com/2013/06/puppy-thumbnail.png

http://poemshape.files.wordpress.com/2013/06/puppy-thumbnail-second.png

On an HP XE400. This little beauty is a laptop I rescued from Electronic Recycling. I wiped an XP install that wouldn't even start. It boasts a sizzling 232 MB of RAM and a whopping 18G hard drive. This version of Puppy is based on Precise and is a non-PAE version called Puppy_Retro. It loads into RAM in about 20 seconds. And everything works perfectly. Even the battery works. I'm replacing my docked Ipod with this free beauty. I have it connected to my stereo and load Radiotray. I got fed up with Apple's endless fussiness and elitism. I couldn't play this. I couldn't play that. "Sorry, won't play flash. Server isn't blah, blah, blah... Oh? Is that Windows Media? FLAC? OGG? Sorry, can't play those. They aren't good enough for Apple..." The larger images are here (http://poemshape.files.wordpress.com/2013/06/puppy.png) and here (http://poemshape.files.wordpress.com/2013/06/puppy-second.png).

And now? With my Puppy? I can play it all.

Who'd have thought a throw away from trash recycling could be more versatile and useful than a modern day Apple product?

I. Love. Linux.

I had to go back to Windows 7 Pro.. I still have Ubuntu Mini 12.04 in a VM.

Dual Booting is a PIA for me... Hopefully you'll allow me to return to the forums after this post. I don't want to complain. I do still love Linux in general. I just can't run it on the main's anymore. I need all the horsepower I can for Autodesk. That program is mammoth.

As a olive branch though.. I wish to say that I'm running as a Standard User in Win7 using Google Chrome as a sandboxed process(es) via Sandboxie. At least SOME of my linux knowledge transferred.

Oh yeah, I went to install LibreOffice so I fired up CMD.exe and stupidly typed sudo apt-get install libreoffice.

I happen to have a certain personal fondness for Mapup which has about 212 users and Puppy Linux has approximately 23,000 registered users. Apple on the other hand has sold approximately 84,000,000 iPads. LOL actually that's not true but considering there are tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of online radio stations I think I can manage to miss a few. :D Not to mention listening to radio is hardly an indicator of how versatile a device is, whether it's a pc or a tablet or a smart phone. :)
And btw, you can play FLAC files on an iPad with the right player, although why one would want to use up 400MB-500MB for an hour of music on a portable device is beyond me.

enough of this banter. more screen shots.

edit: just as an example, Radio Free HQ, which is a free app has 51,000+ radio stations, from 190+ countries. That doesn't count all the other radio apps. :)
