I recently upgraded from (I think) 11.04 to 12.04 on my desktop (dual boots Ubuntu & Windows 7).
From GRUB, I have 3.2.0-40-generic (normal & recovery mode) , "Previous versions" , and "Windows 7"
If I select "Previous versions", then there is 3.0.0-12, 2.6.38-11, 2.6.38-10 and 2.6.35-23.

Booting into the linux versions gives me strange results, I've summarised them

3.2.0-40 : no keyboard, no mouse, no icons
3.0.0-12 : yes keyboard, yes mouse, no icons, no network, no sidebar
2.6.38-11 : no keyboard, yes mouse, yes icons, no sidebar

no icons: all the icons are the http://download.digitaldm.com/images/RedX.gif
no sidebar: all the apps on the LHS are blank squares (not showing icons)

Before the upgrade, everything worked fine, now I can't even log in when I try the most recent version!

Edit:
Also, possibly unrelated, but while Ubuntu is booting, it spends ~ 2 minutes repeating this:

Stopping modem connection manager
Starting modem connection manager
Starting network connection manager
