I encountered difficulties on my VAIO laptop (VGN-FS Series) due to a broken CD-drive, and the complete-absence of any 'boot from USB' options in the system BIOS. I managed to find a simple solution, which is as follows.
In Windows XP:
1. Download the .iso image of your choice (I chose Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS)
2. Download the Universal USB Installer from here: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/
3. Create a bootable USB and then remove it
4. Download Plop Boot Manager 5.0.14 from here: http://www.plop.at/en/bootmanager/download.html
5. Extract Plop Boot Manager 5.0.14 zip folder, open the folder called 'Windows' and double click on InstallToBootMenu.bat
6. When complete, restart your computer and select the Plop Boot Manager option by pressing down and enter
7. Navigate to the USB option and press enter (which will give an error message)
8. Insert USB stick and press 'try again'
9. When it loads, ignore the first screen and the desktop will load automatically
10. Double click on the install icon on the desktop (if you want to install)
Hopefully it is of some use to other VAIO users, who I see have encountered similar problems.
Best regards.
