I tried installing from boot disk, but would get a DRM GPU lockup.
The computer has a EVGA e-GeForce 7800 GT with 256 MB of memory.

I took the hard disk to another computer (Intel graphics), and was able to install 13.04 on that machine, but when I took the hard disk back to the original machine, It started booting, but then gave the same error message as the live DVD.
I suspect I could get this to work if I could install the proprietary video drivers, but I don't see how to do that if I can't even log in.

Have you tried booting Ubuntu LiveDVD with 'nomodeset (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132)' option enabled?

Yes, this worked. Thanks.
Now if that had been labeled "video safe mode" instead, I might have already tried it.

If there is a way to mark this thread "solved", I can't find it.
