View Full Version : [xubuntu] GigaWare USB to Ethernet Adapter

Xubuntu 12.04.
XFCE 4.10.

The other day I had a major lightning strike happen.
It killed a coax line, a hub, and two onboard NICs.

For some reason, it's now rare to find a PCI ethernet card on shelf anywhere.
I did manage to find a GigaWare USB to Ethernet Adapter at my local RadioShack.
It works fine in Windows XP and 7.
It shows up as a non-writable CD-Drive device with install directories for PC and Mac.
NDISGTK shows that it's there, but nothing offers to let me actually use it.
The installer makes mention of Shenzhen Corechips Electronics Co, LTD.

lsusb outputs this:

Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0a5c:4500 Broadcom Corp. BCM2046B1 USB 2.0 Hub (part of BCM2046 Bluetooth)
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 04f9:0281 Brother Industries, Ltd

Bus 001 Device 011: ID 050d:945a Belkin Components F7D1101 Basic Wireless USB Adapter v1000 [Realtek RTL8188SU]

The Belkin is the adapter I'm using now to get online.
Brother is the printer, there's the keyboard, mouse, Microsoft is the webcam.
I'm guessing the Kontron is the odd ball out.
Is this just a case of no driver base?

Thanks.

Right-click on the "drive" and remove it safely. Check "lsusb" again

It's definitely that kontron device that's just not supported.

Well, obviously the device is not shown anymore after unmounting the drive mode. Did you install the win driver with ndiswrapper? IMHO the ndiswrapper version from the repos is not patched in 12.04. Try this one:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=885847&p=12592600#post12592600

and follow the links therein

I had installed the driver with ndiswrapper with no new hardware showing up in network management, even when ndiswrappergui showed new hardware.

I've uninstalled ndiswrapper 1.57 from default repositories.
I grabbed the 12.04 deb files from the PPA you ultimately led me to https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ndiswrapper here.

Installed the files: common, dkms, source, and utils (i386) with dpkg.
Grabbed gui from synaptic.

Executed ndisgtk with gksu.
Pointed the GUI to the inf file.
Screenshot!

Clicking configure network takes me to the network setup dialogue.
From here, I'm stuck.

I do not know if ndiswrapper supports LAN connections at all. Add a cable and check

ifconfig -a
lsusb
cat /etc/network/interfaces
cat /etc/resolv.conf
dmesg | grep ndis
ndiswrapper -l

1.57 is buggy
I'm using a driver meant for windows 2000.
I've also used the driver marked abovexp 32.
Neither driver has worked so far.

I still don't understand why you link me to a post that links to a post that links to launchpad.
If you need me to go to that same launchpad, just link me directly to it.

Did you mean for me to install 1.58 yesterday? Because you made it out that you had a patched 1.57.
Anyway, I've grabbed files for 1.58 meant for Ringtail from here: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ndiswrapper

I've uninstalled 1.57 from synaptic.
Installed ndiswrapper-common_1.58, ndiswrapper-dkms_1.58, ndiswrapper-source_1.58, and ndiswrapper-utils-1.9_1.58.

Re-grabbed ndisgtk from synaptic.
Still no pass-through to Network Manager.

This sucker gets used in a ton of cheaper devices.

After reboot it is in storage mode again?

It doesn't automount, but it shows up in devices.
Under windows, it works as an autodelivery for the driver.

I just checked my boneyard and I think I've found a PCI Ethernet cable. I'm going to scrap it out and keep testing as needed until this dongle is sorted.
