I'd suggest that you take a look at Artha (http://artha.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Home). It's available in the Linux Mint Software Center, and probably in the Ubuntu Software manager.

This is kind of old-school, but I just install dictd on my system along with a selection of dict modules available in the repositories. Then you can use any dictd client (like gnome-dictionary or the CLI command "dict") to fetch definitions.
