UbuntuŽ releases prior to Server 10.04.6-LTS are no longer supported. Given my own experience of headaches upgrading to 10.04-LTS from 8.04-LTS (Automatic Dist-Upgrade breaks multiple Packages in such situations), I would recommend a fresh install of 12.04.2-LTS, after of course backing up your documents from relevant subdirectories of /home to a USB memory chip or equivalent medium.

UbuntuŽ releases since 9.10 use the ext4 file system, whereas earlier releases used ext3.

Trash the lot and install the stable 12.04 LTS supported until April 2017. As mentioned, the releases you are talking about have been dead for an age. No point going there. Not even sure where you got 9.10 to download (was out of support two years ago!).

If you don't like the Unity environment used in the latest releases try Xubuntu and tweak to your liking.

You could still use ext3 on newer releases of Ubuntu. Heck, you can still use ext2, and there are some cases where it makes sense to use ext2 *cough*SSD*cough*

All true but first things first; throw out the dead! Get right of 8.** and 9.** They are security risks if the computer is online (no security updates for over two years).
