View Full Version : Where to buy OS'less Laptops

I'm in the market to buy a new laptop, however I can't seem to find one without an OS. I don't see why I should give MS money for something I'm going to delete as soon as I get home.

Anyone know where I can buy one?

I was going to say Dell too, since they build your computer to order.

I've been looking on Dell, but there's no options that I can see for not selecting an OS.

I have no idea where you are asking from, but if in the UK have a look at Novatech (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/home.html) or PCSPECIALIST - Custom PCs (http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/) both of whom sell PCs and laptops without an OS.

I have just configured a custom desktop at the second of those two Intel i5-3570K cpu, 8GB ram, 1TB 7200rpm HDD, and it flies with Xubuntu 12.04 on it, and I have to say, is superbly built and cleanly and carefully laid out internally.

Excellent, just what I was looking for, I think I'll be doing a lot of price comparisons tomorrow. :)

Just google-search with the words : NO OS LAPTOP ... as simple as that ... ;)

They don't sell without an OS, but System 76 ships with Ubuntu for default. Hence, no "Microsoft Tax." As a recent customer, I highly recommend it. I got the stock Pangolin and it is pretty boss. There is also ZaReson which I think has an option to ship without an OS, but I could be wrong.

Some of the links on here may be a bit outdated, but others are fine:

If you buy 6 or more, then Dell will install whatever you want on the machines. If you just want a single blank machine, phone them.

Otherwise, if it is only Windows yanking your chain, then get a Mac.

Did you even read the post?

Multiple others suggested Dell. Dell will do whatever you want if you phone them. Even though you cannot select a laptop without OS on the web site, they will sell one to you if you call and ask nicely.

If you buy 6 or more, they will even install a special OS setup for you - if you send them a pre-installed disk drive then they will use that to image your machines, so you can buy hundreds or thousands of machines all preconfigured for a large company.

BTW, at the moment, the best laptop machines are Macs. I'm running a Macbook Pro with Linux. It works like a charm and the screen quality is phenominally good.

I just bought a lenovo essential G580 (i3) from ebay. Just look for non OS or Dos OS. Sometimes laptops may come installed with a small linux OS like linpus etc.

I know ZaReason lets you buy computers with no OS on them. You can also choose to have Linux put on it.
