Ubuntu 13.04 64bit: How to decease cursor size globally?

I am unable to decrease the cursor size within Ubuntu. I run a 2560 x 1440 monitor and feel the cursor is still too big. I have researched the forums and have not found any suggestions that resolve the problem. I use dconf and try to manually change cursor size from 24 to 16. Nothing sticks after I logout and log in. I do not want to change the theme as I love the way the cursor looks stock. Any suggestions?
