Hi All,

Here's the problem: after upgrading a couple of weeks ago, when i went to reboot it wouldn't shut down, just got stuck on the ubuntu splash screen. If however in the grub menu I select the previous kernal then it shuts down with no problems. I thought I would wait a while to see if it got fixed with updates, but still not. Anyone any ideas?

All the best...

ps this happens with reboot or shut down

Hi there.

Does running

sudo init 0

or

sudo shutdown -h now

work?

and maybe post the contents of /var/log/syslog

Hi Barry thanks for your help with this,

I tried both of those and neither made any difference. As for var/log/syslog the whole file is to big for me to upload it all, can I just copy and paste part of it? Which part?. Also there were several syslog files I chose the one just named syslog with no number...

All the best, Alistair.

You can redirect the output of any command into a new file using ‘>‘ and then just upload that file to this thread, but as /var/log/syslog file usually has many lines maybe you should use the command tail, which delivers the last part of the file and with it you can define the number of lines you want.

tail -100 /var/log/syslog > name_of_output_file

Hi

That last log did not have the correct information in it.

Boot into the kernel that is giving you problems.

Empty the current log file.

echo "" | sudo tee /var/log/syslog

Shutdown computer. Let it hang and then force it to shudown as you did before.

Maybe try magic key combination.....

alt + sysreq r e i s u b.

Reboot computer.

Then please post the output of this command.

grep -m1 -B100 "\[ *0\.0*\]" /var/log/syslog

Capital B as Ubuntu is case sensitive.

Kind regards

Hi Matt,

I copied and pasted the command into the terminal, but where do I find the output?

Hi

@nosmokenofire.

I have just edited my last post with clarified instructions.

Try them again. If nothing is returned then it may need tweaking.

EDIT:

Please copy and paste and not type the commands as it will eliminate typos.

That seems to be your problem.

Please try this:

gksudo geany /etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.confand comment out these lines:

daemon.*;mail.*;\
news.err;\

*.=debug;*.=info;\

*.=notice;*.=warn |/dev/xconsole

Open Ubuntu Software Center. Click Edit | Software Sources.... Select the Updates tab and check on Pre-released updates. In a Terminal, run `sudo apt-get install linux-generic linux-headers-generic linux-image-generic`. Reboot.

In the newer kernel the bug may have been fixed. This worked for me.

Hi

That may not be the answer this time slickmaster, as I have the same error but no shutdown/reboot problems.

You are most probably right, matt.
I assumed that once rsyslog apparently isn't moving the logs into the correct log file because incorrectly assumes that xterminal is installed, it would be correlated to the OP shutdown/reboot problems.
Thank you for your heads-up, matt, we're lucky for having you around.

Updating the kernel is a good idea.

It seems I have the latest kernal

Reading package lists... Done

linux-generic is already the newest version.
linux-headers-generic is already the newest version.

Thanks all the same. Any other ideas?

That is not the last kernel version available for Raring.
You can get the last one here: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.9-raring/

Thanks for your help Slickymaster. I'm a bit of a novice, could you please explain what I do with the link you gave me.

Many thanks, Alistair.

You have to download the necessary files for the upgrade. Between the files inside the kernel directory you need just 3 of them. First get the linux-headers file that ends with “all.deb”, then get the linux-headers file that ends with “i386.deb” or “amd64.deb” depending upon your computer architecture, and finally get the linux-image file that ends with “i386.deb” or “amd64.deb”, again depending upon your computer architecture.

After downloading the 3 files you will install them by order, and make absolutely sure that you install them in this order:

1- Install linux-headers-3.9.0-030900_3.9.0-030900.201304291257_all.deb (ending by all.deb)

sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.9.0-030900_3.9.0-030900.201304291257_all.deb
2- linux-headers-3.9.0-030900-generic_3.9.0-030900.201304291257_ (headers ending by i386.deb or amd64.deb depending on your computer architecture)

sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.9.0-030900-generic_3.9.0-030900.201304291257_i386.deb
3- linux-image-3.9.0-030900-generic_3.9.0-030900.201304291257_ (headers ending by i386.deb or amd64.deb depending on your computer architecture)

sudo dpkg -i linux-image-3.9.0-030900-generic_3.9.0-030900.201304291257_i386.deb
After all being done, reboot your computer and run:

uname -rto confirm that you have the last stable kernel version running on your computer.

Slickymaster,

Just so I dont completely mess my system up:

uname -a gives me:
Linux alistair-Aspire-5100 3.8.0-21-generic #32-Ubuntu SMP Tue May 14 22:17:37 UTC 2013 i686 athlon i686 GNU/Linux

Does this mean I go with the i386.deb version?

Sorry if my questions are silly...

Alistair.

Slickymaster,

No, your questions aren't silly at all, quite the opposite, I see them as completely valid. Better safe than sorry.

Regarding your question, i386 and i686 are both 32-bit and x86_64 is 64-bit, so in your case you go with (maintaining the some logic of my previous post):
1 - linux-headers-3.9.0-030900_3.9.0-030900.201304291257_all.deb (http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.9-raring/linux-headers-3.9.0-030900_3.9.0-030900.201304291257_all.deb)
2 - linux-headers-3.9.0-030900-generic_3.9.0-030900.201304291257_i386.deb (http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.9-raring/linux-headers-3.9.0-030900-generic_3.9.0-030900.201304291257_i386.deb)
3 - linux-image-3.9.0-030900-generic_3.9.0-030900.201304291257_i386.deb (http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.9-raring/linux-image-3.9.0-030900-generic_3.9.0-030900.201304291257_i386.deb)

Good luck, and tell us how everything went.

It looks like you run into a already reported bug.
See Bug #1157880 - bcmwl-kernel-source 6.20.155.1+bdcom-0ubuntu6: bcmwl kernel module failed to build on kernel 3.9 [wl_cfg80211.c:2025:3: error: too few arguments to function ‘cfg80211_put_bss’] (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bcmwl/+bug/1157880)

Since this bug has already been marked with a 'Fix Released' flag, what you have to do is to apply that fix to your system. Follow the instructions on post #17 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bcmwl/+bug/1157880/comments/17) of the bug report and you should be alright.

Ive marked this thread a solved. A recent update sorted it out I think...

Many thanks to all those who helped out.
