Hi Community,
I hope this fits the "installation" section, please move to another board if the topic is inappropriate here.
We are running the following devices at home:
1 FritzBox Router with Printer connected via USB
1 Multimedia PC Xubuntu x64bit (DVB-T, DVD/BluRay/mp3 archive), also has connected 3TB Harddrive for all the backups
2 IBM/Lenovo Laptops on Xubuntu (Firefox, Thunderbird, Lightning calender)
2 Mobile Phones (Android / Cyanogen)
Currently all kinds of backups are done by hand (e.g. export phones contacts and calender to a file, copy file to external harddrive, ...) but I would like a solution that does a backup of both laptops and both mobile phones, as soon as they connetc to the W-Lan. I come home, my Laptop logs in, it updates the changed files to the 3TB harddrive. I would like to be able to retrieve single files oder versions, as well as my whole Xubuntu installation in case something goes horribly wrong with the Laptop.
I have read quite a lot this weekend about the different backup solutions for ubuntu
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BackupYourSystem
I also came across some nice tutorials on how to use OwnCloud to synchronize Android Phones with Thunderbrid Calender oder Backup a folder into OwnCloud:
http://torbjoern-klatt.de/article/2012/04/08/owncloud-plus-thunderbird-plus-android-equals-perfect-sync/
http://stadt-bremerhaven.de/owncloud-schritt-fuer-schritt-kontaktekalender-unter-android-synchronisieren/
But wouldn't I have to do a backup of the whole OwnCloud thing, to a seperate harddrive, too? How do I limit all this traffic to my home network? How do I initiate it automatically? Do I have to set up another PC or could all this run on the multimedia PC we have?
But to be honest, this is information overload for my poor brain... I have no idea whatsoever where to start. I know how to set up a basic LAMP, guess I could install OwnCloud and all the apps required, but... What is a good strategy to accompish this backup plans? What are the pitfalls? Where to start?
P.S.: If we accomplish this, I am more than willing to write a tutorial :)
