Hi,
I tried to install Ubuntu 12.04.02 using a LiveUSB. After selecting Install Ubuntu alongside Windows XP and click continue, it prompted me the partition size divider and I just left it as default and the partitioning process was then taking place. After running for about 1 hour, it prompted me partitioning failed and then automatically run Ubuntu from the LiveUSB. Then I restarted my Laptop and it prompted me the options Safe Mode, Safe Mode With Networking, Start Last Known Good Configuration and Start Normal, none of these options was successful, every time after the loading process of the Mup.sys, my Windows XP kept restarting, I could no longer access back to Windows XP. Also, I noticed that 12GB of free spaces were gone from the partition C after the partitioning failed (18 GB free spaces before partitioning failed).

What's worse, I don't have the Windows XP Recovery CD with me right now. I tried the Boot Repair with recommended settings but problems persisted. Below is the generated boot info. I was tempted to install Ubuntu after reading so many articles praising its attractive design, ease of use & installation. Such an unthoughtful action had left me in the dark now. Ubuntu wasn't installed, partition was damaged and WinXP was inaccessible meanwhile I'm having a lot of issues to be setttled under WinXP urgently, kindly please help. Thank You.

Sorry for your problems, but you have part of the blame too. Repartitioning always carries some risk and you should have a full backup of your data and ALL your install media for all your OSs at hand.

It's much better not to use the slider of the installer, but to resize your ntfs partitions in advance, because windows gets lost real fast if other tools touch its system partition. However, including this option in the ubuntu installer is a lose-lose situation. If you include it, and sometimes it fails at the partitioning, people will complain. If you don't, people will also complain because they need to use other tools to resize the ntfs partitions first.
Also, this might not have been a fault of the installer itself, the hdd can be temporarily unreadable and stop the process.

You could try testdisk from live mode to try restoring the old partition layout. Hopefully none of the files are destroyed. Testdisk can also look into the partition it found, so you can see if it opens the folder structure or not (that's the P option in testdisk):
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Step_By_Step

Since Disk Management in XP can't resize partition, like in win7, you have to use some third party tool for that, or Gparted from the ubuntu cd in live mode, or Gparted Live CD. But the first task is to try getting your data back, and the old partition layout. If it didn't finish the repartitioning I guess no data started to get written, so it should all be there when the old layout is written back. Be careful with testdisk because it's a powerfull tool and it can find older partitions that you deleted on purpose, so watch out which layout you restore (write to the hdd). If in doubt post a screenshot but you know your layout much better than us, we can only guess.

Hi,
Using the LiveUSB Ubuntu Boot Disk, I can still read the Partition C & E yet being able to access the files on both partitions without problems. However, when I use the GParted Partition Editor, it showed that Partition C is having NTFS file inconsistency when not mounted and asking me to run the CHKDSK /F. Currently, I'm copying the Data Saved on the Partition C onto my external USB HD. Under the GParted, should I click Check and Apply to let the GParted fix the problems on Partition C ? I'm confused that the Check operation can also fix problems as described. Thanks

No, linux tools can't do an equivalent of windows chkdsk. And that's the problem with resizing with the slider. Even if it worked in full, XP will notice the new size of its partition and will want chkdsk BEFORE it boots, but you can't run chkdsk until it boots, so you are in catch 22. :)

That's why it's best to resize first, using any tool, reboot XP few times so it can do all its checks, and only then start the ubuntu install.

Good that the data is still there. I don't know if you can do the chkdsk without the XP cd. With the cd you do it in the Recovery Console (or what ever it was called exactly).

It's too late now but apart from backing up your data you should have defragged your drive before trying to resize it.
Don't follow these steps now, get your PC working first.
This is only for if you decide to try installing Ubuntu again.
Windows tends to leave bits of files all over the place. Use the Windows defrag tool.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314848

There is also an unmovable swap file, PAGEFILE.SYS, if you boot from a Live CD you could delete it to make the resize operation faster. The next time you boot Windows it will be recreated.

Some PAGEFILE.SYS links:

It's almost impossible for software to damage your hardware. It might only look like that if a piece of hardware fails when installing some software. Maybe in fact a hdrware failure was the reason the repartitioning of the installer failed.

Ubuntu or Testdisk don't touch your BIOS. At most, they can make changes to the hdd or partition table. But I've never heard of a situation to mess with your BIOS.
