Just downloaded ten new upgrades, one of which was said to deal with "telepathy". Now I know I am old and behind the times, but the last time I looked telepathy was said to be a concept within parapsychlogy that deals with things like extra-sensory perception and analomous cognition. Will someone explain what's going on here? Please! Did I misread the subject of the upgrade title ? Or, perhaps the upgrade really deals with telephony?

This is a good one :)

There is a KDE package called kde-telepathy, it's description in Synaptic is:

"KDE Telepathy aims to integrate real-time communication and collaboration
features into the KDE Plasma Workspaces. It provides means to connect
to several instant messaging networks, chat with your friends and
collaborate with them."

Hope this helps to deconfuse you :)

The description of KDE-Telepathy sounds a lot like telephony to me. Telephony - communications by means of a radio/telephone, the internet being nothing more than a fancy telephone network.
