I ended up buying an http://www.amazon.com/EW-7622UMn-300Mbps-Wireless-Adapter-Extended/dp/B0067I4Z4Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1368026890&sr=8-1&keywords=edimax+7622

This was after trying a lot of difficult solutions that didn't work well. Nice strong signal now

Getting it connected in a normal way should certainly be possible. At the time I tried to "upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10 (early on) there were serious problems with wifi connections. I got a lot of advice and tried it all to no avail. Maybe by now there is some better advice around. I decided to just move back to 12.04 LTS and add the Edimax thumb drive for the best wifi ever. I will not move from 12.04 until there is another LTS release. In my experience (since 8.04) wifi seems to be a continuing problem following "upgrades".
My wifi situation, as far as better reception, has more to do with my laptop than with Ubuntu. The Edimax is better than what is built in to my laptop.
