View Full Version : [ubuntu] 13.04 upgrade, after login screen desktop goes black

Hi everyone,

I upgraded my laptop to 13.04, and everything worked fine. It upgraded, restarted and I was using it for several days. Recently, some upgrades were available so naturally I let it do its thing. After restart of the system though, the screen goes blank after the login.

Everything looks good and works fine up to that point. As soon as I put in my password and hit Enter, the whole screen goes black.

I was able to still open the terminal with Ctrl+Alt+T, but nothing else to my knowledge.

So my questions are:

1. What happened?

2. How can I fix this?

Thanks in advance!!

EDIT:
IT appears that the proper screen is displayed before login, after suspending the computer, and also if trying to switch to a Guest Session. But as soon as it SHOULD show the desktop, it is only a black screen.

Could you post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /var/lightdm/lightdm.log files??

Your sys has nVidia GPU but is using Nouveau driver. What happens if you use Gnome Fallback at the Login? (because right then you were 2D and 13.04 doesn't have Unity 2d as a default anymore...)

Could you post the results of

lspci -vnn | grep -i VGA
dpkg -l | grep nvidia
/usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p

I'm hoping you have a somewhat recent nVidia GPU and the driver is just not setup...

I don't know how to use the Gnome fallback. Didn't know any of that was even an option.

I'll post the outputs in a minute, it's difficult to work on that laptop

Okay-
That GPU will use Nouveau or the nvidia-173 driver... It's just personal preference which driver you want to use for it. For that card they end up about the same. Neither supports 3D for Unity 3D... See the "no" in your test.

12.10 had Unity 2D set as a Fallback Graphics. 13.04 didn't included that as default in the suite. If you want to continue using that:

sudo apt-get install unity-2d

If you install that or not... When you first boot and get to the graphical login (lightdm), to the right of your user name, there will an Icon. If you select that Icon with your mouse, it will popup a menu with Desktop environment options. If your Install Unity2D, that menu is going to have options along the lines of Ubuntu (unity3d), Unity 2D (or unity fallback), Gnome Fallback, Gnome Fallback (without effects). Select one of the Fallback options and "then" continue logging in. use what works best for you.

A short explanation of what went on- If you've been using Unity since it came out, the first time you booted into the Unity desktop (first version) it checked for 3D support and if not capable, popped a box up saying "Defaulting to Unity 2D", then tha box quickly went away on it's own. It kept that option as a default (last used login) option... until that desktop wasn't included as part of the packaged software in this new version (13.04)... So you weren't even aware that there was other desktop options. You didn't need to, until now.

Myst1234

installed Unity 2d and got this message - Unity-2d is already the newest version.

I cannot find any icon. All I have is my username, Guest Session and Remote Login. The Ubuntu 13.04 is in the bottom left, and then a few icons in the top right by the time and battery life.

No Icon at all? Sounds like you need to reinstall the grapghical login... Go recovery. Drop to a root prompt with networking...

apt-get --purge lightdm
apt-get install lightdm
service lightdm start

Hmm... Change to Unity 2D manually...
2 ways.
-1st method: Edit file /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf. Look for the line that says "user-session=ubuntu" and change it to "user-session=ubuntu-2d"
-2d method

sudo /usr/lib/lightdm/lightdm-set-defaults -s ubuntu-2d

If that doesn't correct it, then resetting the unity session profile files might help.

Myst1234
May 6th, 2013, 08:15 AM

So... Again. I think I asked for this before, but I think you said it was "Blank." Please post "/var/log/lightdm/lightdm.log". Note that you need to use "sudo" rights to be able to even read it. Otherwise it will say something like permission denied...

Your graphics driver says the nvidia driver is loading and working. It sees all your devices. That leaves lightdm or ubuntu-2d (unity2D), which could be the package or the profiles for...

So that seems impossible... Your graphics layer capabilities require you to run a 2D desktop. We both know that. Your desktop config file is configured to use "unbuntu-2d" and "unity-2d is installed. We confirmed that...

But look at the 2nd to last line in that log:

[+22.05s] DEBUG: Session 1740 running command /usr/sbin/lightdm-session gnome-session --session=ubuntu

What happens if you boot to a tty console prompt (instructions linked from post#2 of my Graphics resolution Sticky) and enter as a command:

sudo /usr/sbin/lightdm-session gnome-session --session=ubuntu-2d

Just an idea. That might be a work-around if it work's... but I'm thinking some setting is stuck on Untiy 3D "somewhere" and not a normal setting, that is over-riding the normal setting. This may have to be reported as a launchpad bug... probably on initiually and ubuntu or lightdm. It may take a stack trace to debug what's happening there.

Another thing to try is booting to a TTY console, login... then use

startx

Myst1234

I'm going through your steps to Temporarily Boot in TTY Console and noticed where you say

"arrow right to where it says quiet splash vt.handoff=7" Mine does not say =7 at the end. Just quiet splash/$vt_handoff. Would that have something to do with my problem?

Myst1234
May 6th, 2013, 10:16 PM
startx brought my desktop back, except it's completely empty. No icons, no app bar, time, battery life etc etc.

The only difference I see now, is that when I Ctrl+Alt+T for my terminal, I am now root@ instead of my name@.

Should I now try the sudo /usr/sbin/lightdm-session gnome-session --session=ubuntu-2d?

MAFoElffen
May 7th, 2013, 02:21 AM
root? That is why you have nothing... root does not have X privileges and no profile. That is why it have no icons.

Describe what you are doing to end up as root...

Myst1234
May 7th, 2013, 02:50 AM
I did -

Boot in TTY which was Grub menu, then "e", then went down to the line that started with 'linux' and changed the end text of quiet splash vt.handoff to --verbose_signal

Then hit Ctrl+x to boot.

I was brought to my login so I logged in and opened a terminal, then -

sudo startx

My desktop image came back, but NOTHING else. So I hit Ctrl+Alt+T for my terminal, and that's when it said root.

Currently it says my name and everything is black again.

MAFoElffen

Myst1234
May 7th, 2013, 03:41 AM
It wouldn't start without sudo, told me it was unreachable or something like that.

I will try just startx now and report back.

Hi everyone,

I upgraded my laptop to 13.04, and everything worked fine. It upgraded, restarted and I was using it for several days. Recently, some upgrades were available so naturally I let it do its thing. After restart of the system though, the screen goes blank after the login.

I ran into this also using cinnamon as my desktop. I dinkered around quite a bit and installed a number of other window managers to try assuming cinnamon itself was broke. This ultimately ended up changing my chooser which gave me the option back to select the window manager. (my box was switched to using lightdm which did not have it - I believe I'm using the kde dm now, kdm)

As far as the other window managers, I didn't find any that gave me easy of access without a huge learning curve and a need to entirely reconfigure my desktop so I switched back to trying to fix cinnamon. I don't know if this will help with your issue, but what I ultimately ended up doing was adding the ppa for the cinnamon-stable repository, then removed and re-installed all of the cinnamon components and it's working fine, complete with my initial settings.

Hi,

I had the same blanck screen after login and no foot icon to choose the session.

I fixed both issues by installing gnome-session-fallback. I can now choose from "Gnome Fallback", "Gnome Fallback (no effects)" and "Ubuntu".

Here is the reference (in French) that saved me :
http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/gnome-session-fallback

Long live the penguin !
