Mame issue

Hello I'm trying to run Cube Quest a chd + rom Mame game. What keeps happening is I get game missing rom or chd files. What I have is a folder in mame named roms. In that folder is cubeqst.zip and cubeqst.chd. I've tried using a folder in chd and using the cubeqst folder in roms all give me the same error. What can I try? Is there a mame log I can see where it's looking for the chd file? Any help would be great. I'm using mame .146-2.
