I know it's May 2013 somewhere in the world, so here goes:

1. Stay within the board rules, no matter how hot you may believe the wallpaper/screen shot to be.
2. If you are going to quote, there isn't a need to quote an img-embeded picture - Just don't do it. Please just reference the post by page number/page link/etc.
3. Off Topic Posts will be edited or removed.
4. The desktops thread is not to be used as a means to post explicit or suggestive, and provocative images (they must be safe for your kids and/or boss to see). Please help to keep the thread relevant and safe to browse for everyone.
5. The moderators of this forum reserve the right to edit or remove your posts as necessary so they may comply with our Community Rule set.
6. Please use reduced-size thumbnails, out of respect for people running on lower bandwidth or screen resolutions.
7. To avoid having users having to ask you for them. when possible we request that you format your posts in the following order: NOTE this is optional

Themes: Name/where you got it (with link would be nice).
Wallpaper: Name/where you got it (with link would be nice).
Icons: Name/where you got it (with link would be nice).
Programs: Name/where you got it (with link would be nice).

Important Note: Any image posted that is excessive will be removed! Use a thumbnail or use a text link to your image. If your image is removed, this is why.

I've never had a prob with audio (or lack thereof) but...

Many others did have audio issues, during testing.

It seems to center around whichever Linux kernel version you are using.

I would judge that the Linux 3.9 mainline kernel (http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.9-raring/) works best for most ppl, based on what I've read in the threads... ;)

thanks. I thought that's what I was running :) I'll have to check but it may also be a VirtualBox issue. It may not be building all the guest modules correctly.

edit: well hmmm... I tried the kernel and even with the matching headers VirtualBox doesn't want to build. oh well, I'll see what happens :)

Probably some sort of psychological defect, I suppose. But...

Testing out FreeBSD. Well, GhostBSD anyways. Just don't got the patience for regular FreeBSD, and prefer to have a GUI right away , and hey, although there may be an issue with GhostBSD 3.0's graphical package manager, the command-line works fine. :)

I was using GNOME-DO when I was in XFCE, now that my PC is more capable I'm using Gnome fallback mode and Synapse.

But regarding how to screenshot synapse, I used the Screenshot tool, set it to capture after 5 secs and then I fire synapse. A few seconds later, boom! :) I hope it works in XFCE.

oddly I've had a lot more luck running Ubuntu 13.10 in VirtualBox and thank you :)

I'm running 13.04 right now and it works fine, had to do a clean install as clicking "upgrade" messed everything up (my fault, had who knows how many PPAs in 12.10), but still.

Is that a hibiscus?
No, It's a Sun Parasol Pretty Crimson (mandevilla hybrid). It's a manic climber and if I don't keep it constrained in a basket it tries to kidnap my neighbour's girlfriend. The Flowers are so colour intense my camera's CCD (Nikon) was being over-saturated and not doing the flower justice.

I couldn't really tell, even when the leaves didn't quite look like a hibiscus, but was wondering about the flower.

Ironically debian 7 was one of the more unstable distros I've tried recently, they still haven't fixed it randomly freezing on sandybridge/ivybridge when using any form of compositing (I tried gnome-shell, kde, and openbox + compton) :p, don't have problems like that on any other distro I've tried, and I've tried many and it seemed a rather bad bug to release a stable distro with!

Anyway, I'm currently on xubuntu 13.04, probably the most stable distro I've used on this laptop so far (well once I enabled the proposed repo and updated to the new kernel, because raring was released with one that is ridiculously b0rked: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1169984)

Anyway, onto the topic at hand, the screenshot :)

interesting. Debian 7, so far anyway, is the best behaved distro in VirtualBox on a Mac host for me anyway. I have no issues with compositing unlike several others. I have to say though as far as Ubuntu 13.04 based distros, depending on the spin, it has been everything from completely stable to completely unstable.

Can't be any worse than Ubuntu...

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS would just randomly break after updates, and become completely unusable... Keep in mind it was a completely plain install, only software from the official repositories, nothing modified in any way, pretty standard hardware. On the other hand I had much better luck with 13.04, though it was still far from perfect. openSUSE was pretty good, nice and stable, but some of the standard settings and behaviour were annoying...

I've heard of Arch and it's stability (or lack thereof), but their philosphy makes sense, and it can't be worse than what I've dealt with using Ubuntu....

From what the article stated, the only reason they switched to Linux was because apparently they weren't smart enough to prevent Windows from getting a virus. As far as Linux being stable, every version of Linux I've ever installed (hundreds) was stable until there were updates. Then it was only a matter of time before it broke. I don't think that makes Linux a bad OS. If you install a stable version of Linux I would just say leave it alone. I would of said hopefully NASA has software engineers to fix whatever may break but since they couldn't keep their Windows laptops from getting a virus the point seems moot.

As far as the most stable of the various forms of Linux out there, I would have to say GNU/Debian/Ubuntu seem the most stable.

nice work. I do have a question though. does it save much in the way of resources or gain speed to mix xfce and openbox? I could understand something like KDE or Gnome and openbox which use quite a bit more resources than xfce.

I don't really know whether it makes much of a difference performance wise (it probably does). I use Openbox not just because it is light-weight, but particularly but it is very customizable, much more so than Xfce's window manager.

I'm not talking about the visual aspect, but rather its behaviour. In Openbox I can, for example, control every aspect of my window management (and desktop) with keybindings. Openbox gives you a lot more control than xfwin (see this page (http://openbox.org/wiki/Help:Actions)).

That said, I also really like Openbox' aesthetics, and find it a lot more pleasant to theme than other window managers (it all happens in a single text file, with a very simple syntax).

Its relatively simple, the left part of my menubar consists of:

Default kde menu & Active application widget & Window menubar widget

//edit:

bespin can so the same with "x-bar" I think (I just prefer this plamoid because its easier to use then x-bar)

Omploader will deny access and delete content when it is discovered the pictures are posted on a forum or are accessed too many times . When it is up and running that is. ;) Opmloader was suggested to me by a forum user and all screen shots were deleted because I did not read the policy closely enough .

I'm looking for a new image host, does anyone have any suggestions?

The best thing about ompload was that they provided a command line tool you could use to upload stuff. I wrote a little script using it that would upload an image and output the forum code for a thumbnail that linked to the full size image like so...

Yes, I use it as my main OS. I removed apport to prevent bothersome crash messages from popping up, but quite frankly the system is super stable, even if it's only in beta 2 at this point.

The only thing I would really like to see added because I need it is the possibility to sync the Calendar (formerly known as Maya) with my Google Agenda. That would be just awesome.

I find it interesting that the thing that made my try linux in the first time back in 2008 was the "cool" effects like the cube, wobbly windows and the flame effect when you close the windows. Thanks!

I've never made a "green" desktop that's totally satisfied me, but I keep trying. :)

That's one of my favorites, though...

So I'm normally a XFCE guy.. Been that way since 8.04 roughly.. I finally bit the bullet and installed the straight version of Ubuntu.

After some CCSM tweaking and MyUnity tweaking.. It's not half bad.

Theme is Ambiant Crunchy- Blue..

Its relatively simple, the left part of my menubar consists of:

Default kde menu & Active application widget & Window menubar widget

//edit:

bespin can so the same with "x-bar" I think (I just prefer this plamoid because its easier to use then x-bar)

Cool, I'll try this out!

The Window menubar widget is very nice, but how do you manage to get the Active application widget to display text instead of an icon?

(I suppose this is the one you referred to: http://gitorious.org/active-app )

I'm always amazed by the conkys. Too bad I wouldn't use one as the only time I see my desktop is when I reboot (after updates which need it) or the 0.5s after switching to an empty workspace before launching the first app. I always have maximized window or tile two...

It's funny you bring this up. I actually use my watch but people seem to like seeing conky's on their desktops. :)
I actually have managed to use computers for 30+ years without seeing every parameter on screen as well. ;)

Both good points. I've been using computers since the early 80's as well, and while I do like a clean desktop ... I like my conkys.

I like them better that icons on my desktop, I like them better than the "cube" thing some people use, or the composite shadows around open windows and menus - YUK! I don't "tile" my windows, and a maxed program, I rarely do that, does not cover my tint2 bar, because I have set borders, that I can right click on to get at my OpenBox menu system

Others use conky in panel mode, maxed windows don't cover them, and even as interactive panels to start programs.

The beauty of Linux, different Distros, different DE's, different WM's and 1,001 way of doing things. That's what makes us unique from the other OS; MacWin.

While we are at it, lets just uninstall wallpapers and just run on black screens (slightly easier on resources and saves a bit of HD space).;)
