Avahi won't let installation continue

My installation has been hanging for almost 24 hours, repeating every minute how many times it has "Failed to activate service 'org.freedesktop.Avahi : timed out". I'm using the CD to reinstall after the upgrade failed.

When it connects to the network, it says something about the network having a .local domain which is incompatible with the Avahi network discovery service, said service to be disabled. I'm using someone else's network, and I'd rather not screw around with it.

Is there anything I can do?

I tried installing Ub without updating during installation. The program versions on the disk are ROUGH!

Still struggling to update and to get a Unity.

Looks like you need a clean install. Looks like a clean install isn't being done.

Ubuntu needs a repair installation command; when things refuse to work as they should, hours are wasted.
