View Full Version : [kubuntu] Couldn't get native resolution after 13.04 upgrade

My monitor's native resolution of 1920x1080 is not being listed as one of the display options. Not even on xrandr.
NOTE: I should have mentioned that I have set the nomodeset kernel parameter. Otherwise, I couldn't even boot passed the bootup splash screen. For example, the kubuntu splash screen will be shown momentarily before displaying visual artifacts. I had to perform a magic sysrq key sequence to reboot.

Hardware and setup:
GPU: AMD/ATi Radeon 4670M
Driver: open-source radeon

What I have done:
Seeing that nomodeset allows me to boot without issues, I took it upon myself to check the display modes that are reported by xrandr:

xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 800 x 600, current 1400 x 1050, maximum 1400 x 1050
default connected 1400x1050+0+0 0mm x 0mm
1400x1050 60.0*
1280x1024 61.0
1280x960 61.0
1152x864 60.0
1024x768 61.0
800x600 61.0

An online search on the issue of missing resolution tells me that I have to add a new mode using xrandr and set it as the new display mode. However, doing so has no effect (apart from the short flicker before being brought back to 1400x1050 with the message xrandr: Configure crtc 0 failed)

I don't remember seeing xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default last time. I wonder if that's an issue.

Anyone can shed some light on this problem?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. :)

I don't have a Xorg.conf by the way.

Solved. I got it working by removing xserver-xorg-video-ati although it seems odd judging by the fact that it is required for autodetection to work (without explicitly telling Xorg via Xorg.conf which of the subdrivers to load) and yet, for my case, without xserver-xorg-video-ati and a Xorg.conf file, it still works. If someone could chip in a reason for this peculiarity, that will be awesome. Either way, I'm glad that everything turns out fine.
