I'm dl'ing the new Xubuntu ISO and wondering if this is doable: The goal is to boot from a live USB and install software on the USB stick so I can take my environment with me. I run one windows program via wine and one Linux native java program and I use Firestarter to configure IPTables...

Hi MaxWebXperienZ.

You can create a persistant usb.

Alternately you can do a Full install to USB.
It boots a little faster than a Persistent install is more secure and is updateable.

What he said. You should be able to just boot from one medium like a cd or usb drive and install to another usb drive. Just use manual partitioning and chose the right disk.
