Ever since gnome has stopped giving updates to gnome 2, MATE developpers have taken over.

Has anyone tried installing it? How is it on ubuntu?

I have not tried Mate , but here are the newest installation instructions that I could find. http://www.webupd8.org/2013/04/mate-16-released-install-it-in-ubuntu.html

From what I have read Mate is slightly different than the Ubuntu modified version of Gnome 2 and the applications have been renamed.

I have Linux Mint Mate 14 (64-bit and 32-bit) on 2 laptops and 2 desktops. Runs well.
