This is a fresh install of Kubuntu 13.04 64amd, but it crashes soon after login. Crash here means a black screen, sometimes the mouse pointer responds, sometimes not. Sometimes there is a screen full of static white text, sometimes just black. Sometimes it is possible to ctrl-alt F1 to a tty, sometimes not. Sometimes, crash is frozen screen with no response to mouse or keyboard. The crash seems to happen at random a few minutes after log in.
On one occasion, Nvidia driver 313 was activated, but system crashed when shutting down to reboot.
Tried a fresh install using a different USB stick, but same result. iso file was downloaded with bittorrent, and md5sum checks out. Self check of live drive says it is ok.
On login, the bar at the bottom of the screen is always empty, except for the 3 dots button of the Show Activity Manager. See screenshot below.

The crash might be associated with xorg. One happened when attempting to select screensaver. Another time, attempting to select screen capture mode in ksnapshot caused crash.

Hardware is a desktop, a few years old, and it has run earlier versions of Kubuntu 64 ok.
CPU: Intel Core2 Quad, 4GB RAM
GPU: Nvidia Geforce GTX580
