Why isn't there an Open Source Flash Alternative? It seems like something that'd be very, very useful. Because I don't want to support Proprietary, non-portable software like flash. Macromedia doesn't support 64-bit and such, neither do they offer development kits for Linux.

I wouldn't hold your breath on something like that anytime soon, especially since Flash is a proprietary program licensed by Macromedia....

there are many libswf, libflash.... but they all suck because flash sucks because SVG rules!

SVG is an alernative by w3 use it GTK supports it for who knows how long and firefox 1.1 will support it by default

Hi (sorry for the necro-posting, but I found this on Google, so it may help)

I downloaded Ubuntu for the purpose of using Pencil, which is a 2D Animation program.
However, this is not nearly as powerful as Adobe Flash.

In my quick research, I would have to say that F4L would be the best option, however I hae draw-backs from using that program. The main one being that I did not like how it operated on Mandriva, and it just seemed rather half-hearted. Although it does support ActionScript (or its equivilant :) ).

What I now plan to do is to get another computer with Windows/Mac installed and use Flash, or Swish :)

It is just a shame that each different program has a different project file extension (.fla for flash, which doesn't work on f4l).
