is Ubuntu 13.04 still using Nautilus? under About menu it says "Files 3.6.3" and not "Nautilus 3.8.1"
The F3 key which should open another pane is no longer functional, but there is an option in the context menu to "move to" or "copy to" and a big dialogue box to let u choose where.
All in all it's a nice file manager and I can live with it, and the find feature is pretty nifty.
Any other file managers available which u care to recommend?

Plenty of good alternatives to Nautilus...Marlin, Dolphin, Thunar, SpaceFM, PCManFM...and there also plenty of good command line file managers as well. For a recommendation though, I quite like Marlin.

Thunar is my second option even if it pulls in some xfce dependencies.
PCmanFM is another good option but lacks video previews and pulls in LXDE dependencies.

Thanks. Will look into Marlin :)

I use pcman for my netbook on unity. Looking at the dependencies, they're quite minimal from LXDE - just the DE's menu implementation data, 2 packages of less than 100 kb to download. It's quite fast, and they even have a qt version going - so it may attract kde/razorqt users once it's stable enough and into the repos.

Nautilus changes the name to File, I think that is Gnome's decision, not just a Ubuntu thing. The split plane (F3) function is removed, but you can now open as many new windows (under Edit > Preferences and as many new tabs as you want (under the gear menu on the upper right corner)

I wouldn't recommend pcmanfm unless it has fixed this

I'm on Lubuntu 13.04 but I had some issues with the way things were going and now I'm trying out Thunar as file manager and xfdesktop to manage the desktop. Seems to be working okay for now.

Great info, the F3 function was great, but I'm liking the new version more as I get used to it. Right context menu "move to" and "copy to" just make my life that much easier :) BTW, what edit menu? I only see the one "Files" menu.

You are right, the "new window" option is right under "File" while the "new tab" option is under the gear menu on the top right. I was typing from 12.04 last night so couldn't see 13.04's layout.

I too was annoyed about the loss of 'new window' until I discovered that right-clicking on the desired items offers an option of 'new window'. For instance, plug in a USB drive, open files, right-click the USB drive and select 'open in new window'. That covers what I use multiple windows for most of the time.

One can always run Midnight Commander in a terminal if you want the split pane to move around some files :)
