Is microsoft cutting support for XP? If that is the case, I can make someone move to Ubuntu!

XP has less than one year support remaining.
So doesn't Ubuntu (the current 13.04 release expires Jan. 2014).
So please don't "make someone move to Ubuntu;" let them make their own choice. :)

Hopefully this person was already considering a change in OS. Ubuntu certainly is a valid CHOICE:popcorn:, but there are other distributions to consider as well. Please encourage your friend to keep Win XP for a time so that all the expected functionality of Win programs are found in whichever Linux he / she chooses.
I have been successful installing a second OS onto a USB hdd.

Ubuntu is definitely a worthy upgrade from that old corroded XP. :)
But make sure they understand the cons, too, like not being able to run all Windows software. Also, if they were running XP, odds are they have a fairly old computer. You might want to test out the LiveCD to make sure it even will work on their hardware. They may need to go with Xubuntu or Lubuntu.

i will probably stay on XP. maybe add Kubutnu on the disk to use for websurfing and such.
i had Win98 SE until 2006. worked ok. no viruses or instrusions. switched to XP only because windows didn't recognise 1GB ram. LOL. anyway windows xp is a bit safer than 98. antiviruses and such would probably be updated for some time after support runs out. plenty of XP games i haven't played yet or fully finished.

Yes they are. XP reaches EOL next year, Vista reaches EOL in 2017, 7 reaches EOL in 2020, and 8 reaches EOL in 2023, meanwhile by the time XP reaches EOL, I'll probably be on Ubuntu 13.10, or 14.04 or 14.10, whichever comes out first.
And MastaBlasta, I was on 98SE 'till last year, which is when I discovered Linux, and as of now I'm about 95% switched over to *nix, the remaining 5% that requires Windows pretty much is my iPod, which I will eventually trade up to a Sansa from, and lack of my own printer, scanner, and camera, all three of which I'll hopefully eventually obtain, along with my computer not having a memory card reader, which it isn't hard to find an internal memory card reader that'll fit in a 3.5" bay, also, going to have to eventually get a wireless adapter. Also, 2 more GB of RAM and a bigger hard drive will have to happen eventually, along with at least a 19" widescreen monitor. :)
However I'll always have some exposure to Windows on the job and stuff.

Ubuntu might not be a suitable replacement for WinXP depending on the age of the hardware. WinXP for example will work fine on my laptop but Ubuntu will be like molasses.

On this old laptop Win XP was getting slow so I installed Ubuntu. The 3d was too much and molassas would have won the race. I switched from Unity to gnome session fallback and am quite pleased with the performance. I've noticed that 13.04 is even a bit snappier!
