I think is should be in the repositories but it's not there.

I have a stubborn USB scanner that needs this program to work.

Yea, it's Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy, it's on a old laptop and works good so I don't want to mess with it and don't have the time to deal with all the tweaks I had to do to make it work right, and I can't believe I just had to say that, you know what I mean if you have used Ubuntu on OLD laptops.

That site only goes back so far, but there's a reference for you.

If your scanner is in this list it will work using Xsane.
I have the Epson perfection 1650 and it works perfectly.

8.04 is "end of life" so the repositories are closed and installing applications such as skanlite is not a beginner task. I recommend you install a currently-supported distribution in a "dual boot" setup with your 8.04 and begin the process of migrating. A distro such as CentOS will give you a familiar environment, good support for older hardware, and many years of support. Or if you prefer to stay in the Ubuntu family, consider Lubuntu or Xubuntu. :)
