Hey.
I have a USB 3 disk on Unity, but it is always on and warm (55 C), and just wonder how I can let it spin down, when inactive for a longer period.

Under 10.04 there are an alternative under System-->Preference-->'Power Managment' and you may check "Spin down hard disks when possible".

Cheers

You may want to take a look at "laptop-mode-tools". According to the maintainer it can be used on the desktop.

You can edit the configuration file.
