A comment I read here (http://ostatic.com/blog/kdes-future-will-be-wayland) said that most of the reason Nouveau is slower than the closed-source Nvidia driver is because Nvidia is refusing to release documentation on how to control GPU clock speed.

Little thing here the open source nouveau is running at about half to 1/4 of the correct GPU clock speed. So if nvidia did release just how to control the clocks of there GPU correctly most of the performance issue would disappear. Yes some games would run faster with nouveau than there own drivers.

Is this true? If the devs behind Nouveau find out how to up the clock speed, would the claim made here really come true?

What are the chances Nvidia will release documentation (probably close to 0% I'd assume) or the Nouveau devs will discover, whether by reverse engineering or by some other means, on how to control clock speed?

It is no more or less true than this posted below in the comments. Ubuntu has put Wayland on hold in favor of different project at the moment. I have found it is best to wait and see when it comes to Ubuntu. many hours have been wasted speculating about things that have never come to be.

* Wayland does in no way require Nouveau. It's independent of a specific graphics driver or hardware. Also, Nouveau supports Wayland just fine. The post you quote about third party patches is from 2.5 years old (very old, compared to the pace of development in that area).

Moved to Ubuntu, Linux and OS Chat, as this really isn't a question specific to the Ubuntus.

I'm not wondering because of Wayland. I want to know because I prefer to use open source drivers if possible, and the only reason I've never planned on using Nouveau is because I keep hearing how vastly inferior it is. But if that inferiority is countered by something as simple as figuring out how to up the clock speed, then that would be good news.
