View Full Version : Good single-player offline game

I've searched high and low for suggestions for good single-player offline games for Linux and I get a lot of fps suggestions, but no real info on any of them.
I'll be without internet for a while soon and I'm looking for something to keep me busy and entertain me.
I've got AssaultCube and 0AD installed already, but AC is best played multiplayer.
Any suggestions for something free with a decent single-player mode? It can be anything from fps to platform. Frankly, Windows suggestions are welcome too.

I have played Nexuiz once. I am not that big on games, but I liked it a lot! I know it worked for me on Fedora - should not be a problem on Ubuntu either, I guess.

Hi zer010.
These are the games that I've played lately, and had a great time with them:
Braid
Limbo
Rochard
Vessel
They are all mainly puzzle based games. All in the Software Center, except Vessel.
You can find several examples of gameplay in youtube.
Have fun.
Regards.
Oopsy... all paid software there.

Oh I forgot- Tux Racer. :)
I do not know if you would have interest in this simple game though! :)

Check out MegaGlest, a 3D RTS of (what I consider) fearsome difficulty, but maybe I haven't played it enough.
Warzone 2100 is a terrific 1999 (I think) commercial game that has only improved since it went open source.
Battle For Wesnoth is one of the MUST-have games for any platform.
Pingus is a recreation of the classic puzzle game Lemmings.
All are free and in the repositories.

There's a fork of Nexuiz called Xonotic that I might try, but not sure if it has a proper single-player campaign.
Last time I tried Tux Racer on my older desktop, it brought it to it's knees! Dunno what was up with that, but I'm looking for something a lil deeper anyways.
I played Glest a couple years ago and as far as RTS goes, I have C&C:TFD to keep busy. I might still check it out as it should be pretty different.
Don't know if I've tried Warzone 2100, could be worth a look.
For the life of me, I've never been able to get BFW going right. Not that it doesn't run, I just can't seem to figure out what to do after the first turn...lol
I've played Pingus and it's not bad, but I think I'll skip it this go 'round.
Thank you all for the tips and if there are any that you can think of, don't hesitate to add!

tuxracer is shortplay.
how about supertuxcart (the latest version from their website). it can be plenty of fun.

huh it has a tutorial you know, and it is preety much self explanatory after that.
otherwise not many free single player oriented fps games. there are some good ones, but you would need to pay for them.

That's quite a list of games I didn't know existed! Matter and One Late Night look pretty interesting.
@CatKiller
Dunno about Pioneers, but Endgame looks interesting and I think I've come across it before... never played it though.

An isometric shooter? That's not something you see on a desktop often...
Again, thank you all for the great tips!

Super Tux Cart (http://supertuxkart.sourceforge.net/) is a must try, very entertaining game, though might not appear as such at first glance. Open Arena (http://www.openarena.ws/smfnews.php) is very similar to good old Quake Arena.

Gonna have to try SuperTuxKart now :)
For what it's worth, Super Tux is also pretty fun, basically a Super Mario clone.
Uplink is pretty fun if you're into the whole hacker-sim thing.

Well, I've decided to download/install a few of the suggested games and here's what I got.
Warzone2100, Edgame:Singulartiy, Matter, Sonic 3D, and Wesnoth. I did have TuxKart, but the controls didn't respond very well. I also ended up getting zsnes to get my Street FighterII fix. Note that I haven't actually played everything I got yet. I'd still like an FPS with some sort of campaign mode so if anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate it. It seems that most of the free Linux FPS's are like Sauerbraten and AssaultCube, pick a level and deathmatch AIs. Not exactly objective oriented.

I have yet to see a good Linux FPS that is free and has a great story, however there are mods for some AAA games that offer long gameplay and an excellent story. Two of the games are Half-Life and Half-Life 2. You can buy them for really cheap and install the mods you wish, however: mods will work only in Windows (with rare exceptions) and offline mode in Steam can be tricky. The same goes for Portal 1 and 2, the puzzle 3D FPS platformers :).
If you like RPG's you'll love both Witchers, Morrowind, Oblivion and Gothic Series: hundreds of hours of gameplay time and nice story. Windows only. Let's not forget the Deus EX series, which are a mix of FPS/RPG and offer really nice story.
I could go on forever. Most of these games are really cheap, and you can get some DRM free (on GOG). They are are a nice investment, since you can play them over and over again without being bored.
In the repositories you can find free platformers/puzzlers of excellent quality, but the rest is of variable quality with rare exceptions (for example strategy: Wesnoth).

@R33D3M33R
I didn't really expect much in the way of story when it comes to Linux FPS. I was just hoping for more than the usual bot deathmatch mode.
Thanks for the suggestions, but I am looking for free games (Linux or Windows). However, I do have one of the games you suggested, Oblivion.
I was thinking of checking out Oolite, but I've seen that there are a few other space sims out there. Although I haven't seen them in the repos, Freespace2 and Vega Strike are supposed to be Linux compatible.

I too have sought a single player first person shooter for linux with a decent campaign, but haven't found one...
A very interesting-looking game that I haven't tried out yet: Osmos.
Half-Life 2? For Linux? Where? How?

Shouldn't there be some way to alter a Cube2 game to make it somewhat more goal oriented? I was thinking of perhaps checkpoints throughout a level with pre-deployed enemies that guard their particular areas. The checkpoints would basically be the goals that essentially give a guided tour of the level. Hell, it would work without checkpoints for a more free-style type game. Also no enemy respawn and/or no time limit. Level ends when all checkpoints are met and/or all opponents are eliminated. Obviously, this setup wouldn't work in small levels. I don't really need a story, just something more than a first-person Gauntlet with the base acting as an enemy generator.

it really is strange isn't it?! i mean those first doom games had simple story and goal -> get to the exit switch. but these free FPS games don't even have that.
descent games, descent and interesting maps yet no story. like for example quake based smokin' guns. or padman. no stories and also no coop modes.

well you could now try Oblivion's predecesors. Morrowind is guaranteed to occupy you for some time. works in wine. has descent graphics. or even older elderscrolls (dagerfall and Arena i think both were released for free.
there are plenty of freely released good old games (dos widn95/98) that mostly work in wine. i think Command & conquer and Red Alert are both free now. let's not even start with old Abandoned dos games that work well in linux if you use dosbox. they might have poor graphics but they are still fun to play.

Both Arena and Daggerfall, Elder Scrolls I and II respectively, are free downloads from bethesda.com. Both run admirably with DosBox, and both have the same do-whatever-you-want gameplay as Morrowind (III), Oblivion (IV) and Skyrim (V). Lots of support on the Interwebs for both of them, too.

Just open the Ubuntu Software Center and search for steam, and it'll install it for you. Then, the game needs to be purchased from Steam.
Oh yeah, Osmos is a lot of fun. And frustration.

Oops. I hadn't noticed that it was Half-Life 2. The Source engine, which powers the Orange Box, has been ported to Linux; Team Fortress Source is already available, Left For Dead 2? is about to be released. The bottom line is that I would expect Source Engine games to be fully ported within a year or so.

I did look into modding Cube2:Sauerbraten and it turns out that it does have a "no-enemy-respawn" mode in single player. Now whether they still act like deathmatch bots that know where the player is and seek to shoot is something I haven't tried yet. Perhaps their AI could be modified to do patrol paths and guard positions. Again, I have to play around with it some to see how they react.
I have Skyrim as well, but for xbox360. As for C&C, I have The First Decade bundle, so I'm good on that. I have a snes emulator for some of the older games, but I haven't really thought of DOSBox. Perhaps I should see what abandonware is out there for that and look into the older ES games as you suggested.
Although I'm not gonna get into Steam currently, I'll check it out eventually.
Thanks again to everyone for their suggestions! ^_^d

Warzone 2100 was a superb RTS which got lost in the late-90s RTS flood, which is the main reason that it was released into open source, where it has gotten better and better since.
Yes, the best open source games are few and far between, but there are still a few gems (Wesnoth, UFOAI, uqm (a recreation of the amazing Star Control II), Lugaru, OpenTTD, FreeCiv). Since the many Humble Bundles, Steam, and the games I've backed on Kickstarter, there are a raft of great closed source games, a (very) few of which have gone open source since release.
My desktop box dual-boots Windows 7, strictly for gaming (all, IMHO, Windows is good for), and Linux. These days, I rarely boot into Windows, since there are so many games this old rocker can now play under Linux. And the future's so bright, I gotta wear shades.

Can't believe no one mentioned roguelikes yet. Can't go wrong with Dungeon Crawl or Tales of Maj'Eyal. I've recently been enjoying Infra Arcana, lovecraftian vibe with great sanity mechanics.
As for fps option, get Warsow with racesow mod and stockpile on custom maps.

Do you really mean that? 0a.d. is very good, still an alpha but already nice. Have you ever thought of that those Blockbuster Games do cost million of Euro/Dollar to make them? You can't expect anything like Starcraft II or Battlefield 3 as an Open Source game. Hopefully you are aware of that fact.

As someone in the FOSS gaming community I do have to say, why not help out instead of just complaining that we've not been able to do everything for you? There are lots of projects out there screaming for more developers, but often we gets lot of flak because guess what, developing good games in your free time takes years and years or heaps of developers and artists (which none of us seem to have).
