Can I recover files from a crashed installation?

I installed ubuntu on a family computer about a year ago using the wubi installer. It had never been updated since and when it finally was upgraded the system crashed. Ubuntu is now inaccessible but I was wondering if there was a way to recover any files saved on it or where they might be found through windows?
