Hello guys n girls):P

I downloaded Ubuntu 12 desktop and made a DVD from the ISO and can't get it to boot from the DVD with out freezing part way through, I get a purple-ish screen with the Ubuntu logo and 5? little dots under it showing it's loading.
It loads for a while and then just stops, DVD stops.
So I tried the Windows Installer Wubi and that's not any better...

A screen shot of my system info and a pic of what comes up when booting Ubuntu from the boot list on start up...

Thanks for looking..

It's hardware issues of some kind. Most of them can be worked around. 9 times out of 10 it's either ACPI (power) or video driver issues. Usually the quickest way to find stuff on the net that will help is to start with general googles that include distro, computer make / model and a short / not too specific phrase, like: ubuntu 12.04 dell l502x install.

The info you posted in the screen shots doesn't really help much. What is the *exact* make and model of your system and your system specs such as video (particularly), RAM, CPU, HDD, etc. and the ubuntu version you are trying to install (12.04.2, I assume?).

NVIDIA GeForce 210 is the interesting part.

Try NOMODESET as suggested by bcbc in post #3.

Bucky Ball
April 15th, 2013, 09:22 AM
Use nomodeset: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132

+1. If that doesn't work you could try another, probably the acpi ones. Looks like graphics.

Thank for all the reply's, but I guess I should say that I'm trying to test and not Install Ubuntu at this stage and run it from the CD/DVD..
The link to http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 doesn't seams to apply to me? I could be wrong very wrong:lolflag:
I did try type in acpi_osi= in the black and white screen but I don't know what I'm doing...

graphics.? would disabling the graphic card and enabling the on-board graphics help?

Thank for all the reply's, but I guess I should say that I'm trying to test and not Install Ubuntu at this stage and run it from the CD/DVD..

exactly. once you get past the boot screen you will get the try it option or install it and you will select try it to run it live.

graphics.? would disabling the graphic card and enabling the on-board graphics help?

you are not disabling graphics card, but modesetting (i think in kernel) to be able to boot into the OS.

nomodeset
The newest kernels have moved the video mode setting into the kernel. So all the programming of the hardware specific clock rates and registers on the video card happen in the kernel rather than in the X driver when the X server starts.. This makes it possible to have high resolution nice looking splash (boot) screens and flicker free transitions from boot splash to login screen. Unfortunately, on some cards this doesnt work properly and you end up with a black screen. Adding the nomodeset parameter instructs the kernel to not load video drivers and use BIOS modes instead until X is loaded.

have a look here for various available boot options:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions

hopefully once you boot the default opensource drivers will provide a good enough experience. as i do not believe you can use proprietary in live OS (unless you boot from USB with persistence). because you need to reboot to finsih their installation and all data is lost on reboot from live session.

i know i need ot use modeset wiht my ATI card to boot into Opensuse Linux, but no need to on Ubuntu.

Some thing new has happened :-D
After removing Wubi from the HDD which has Windows on it, I reinstalled Wubi on my smallest empty HDD and now I get this screen...(see attachment)
So no I'm going to try some of those acpi commands :)

Also this info came up when I hit the TAB key..

Bucky Ball

Ah, a Wubi install in Windows. A completely different kettle of fish and why you are not getting the options. Try booting from the LiveCD that you install the regular Ubuntu with. When you get to the screen with the options to Try/Install etc, hit F6. You will get a pop-up with a bunch of options. Hit the 'nomodset' which should be on the list and continue to 'Try Ubuntu'. What happened?

Wubi is not intended as a permanent solution and is intended to try Ubuntu for awhile to see if you like it (but frankly you can do this with a LiveCD anyhow).

If you are running regular Ubuntu from the Try Ubuntu options from the LiveCD, though, you can have problems installing some drivers, namely wireless and graphics, especially if third-party. There's nowhere to install them (except to RAM).

Hello again :)

We're getting close lol, with the LiveCD. What I have found is if I hit the F6 key as soon as the screen fires up with the key board pic - little icon at the bottom of the screen I get to choose English and then the main menu is there=D>

I can select Mem test that works and I can select Check Disc for Defects (none).

I can select try Ubuntu without installing but it does the same as before and just stops running after a bit... I don't get the list with 'nomodset' in it...

Bucky Ball
April 15th, 2013, 04:34 PM
When you get to the Try Ubuntu and other options (mem test, check for defects, etc.) there should be a bar along the bottom with a bunch of things you can choose with F* keys. Hit F6 then.

OK for me on start up booting from the Live CD/DVD, I hit the F6 key as soon as the 1st screen appears and then F6 again and I get the full menu...Then I pick the nomodset hit enter to put a * next to it and hit the Esc key and enter again and the CD/DVD starts up and runs for sometime with activity light blinking away and stops just like before...
So next boot up all as above except for now I put acpi_osi= at the end of the boot option line, same results...Did the same thing but typed in acpi_osi="linux" same again and then tried acpi_osi="windows 2006" and yet again the same results, Do I need the inverted commas ? also is it Capitals L for linux and W windows?

April 16th, 2013, 06:11 AM

There's this bug report for the same card that suggested: nouveau.blacklist=1 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/713867) Don't know if it's relevant (as that was for Natty - release 11.04), but might be worth a shot.

Bucky Ball

What happens then? Does it just hang? Have you gotten to the screen with the 'Ubuntu 12.10' on purple before?

Have a look here:

http://whyareyoureadingthisurl.wordpress.com/2011/09/17/nvidia-geforce-210-on-ubuntu-11-04/

Try these steps to get rid of the nouveau then install the nvidia drivers if it lets you. It appears the idea is to get rid of nouveau before you can install the proper drivers.

* apt-get --purge remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
* edit /etc/default/grub and add the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nouveau.modeset=0"
* sudo update-grub
* Reboot

... from here:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/4954/how-to-get-nvidia-geforce-gt-210-drivers-working-on-lucid-lynx

Failing all that have a look here:

Yes it hangs part way through, it hangs in the 'Ubuntu 12.10' on purple screen...every time!!

Do I have to type this as is in 1 shot?? also wouldn't the reboot wipe that as I'm on the live CD still?

Thanks

Bucky Ball

Yea, you're right. Reboot would wipe that but might be pointless on the LiveCD anyhow.

Mag107 can try ubuntu-12.04.2-alternate-amd64.iso.torrent (http://releases.ubuntu.com/12.04/ubuntu-12.04.2-alternate-amd64.iso.torrent) or ubuntu-12.04.2-alternate-i386.iso.torrent (http://releases.ubuntu.com/12.04/ubuntu-12.04.2-alternate-i386.iso.torrent) if its 32bit.

Or you can try Ubuntu-Minimal (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD): for this to work you need a good, working internet connection.

You should be using the 64bit version, not 32bit. Torrent the 12.04.02 LTS AMD64bit ISO from fantab's link, burn to disk and try it. From your specs:

2.53 gigahertz Intel Core2 Duo
64 kilobyte primary memory cache

#-oI just finished putting it in :(

Which is why it took me so long to get back lol but that disk booted up fine and no need to hit the F6 or select anything but English and I installed ubuntu (http://releases.ubuntu.com/12.04/ubuntu-12.04.2-alternate-i386.iso.torrent) and upon booting the new install I got this screen...

So what should I do? Remove the new install? (How) would I go about that?

Thanks guys

Bucky Ball
April 16th, 2013, 05:27 PM
Did you try it from the disk first and did it work fine? No need to uninstall (you just reinstall over it to do that).

At this point you are making progress. I suggest you take this route:

http://www.upubuntu.com/2012/11/how-to-reinstallrepair-grub-2-boot.html

A reinstall is the last resort. It is in there, you are probably not too far away. Boot-Repair will hopefully do the trick.

What did you do at the partitioning section of the install? Let Ubuntu decide or 'Something Else' and manually partitioned?

Hello BB ;)

Ok lets see, No try option on this disk 12.04.02 LTS AMD64bit ISO from fantab's link or the ubuntu-12.04.2-alternate-i386.iso (http://releases.ubuntu.com/12.04/ubuntu-12.04.2-alternate-i386.iso.torrent) either...

The 12.04.02 LTS AMD64bit ISO is installed now and "at the partitioning section of the install" I went for the guided partitioning option and put it on my empty spare 160GB HHD and let it also put a entry in my Master boot record so I can get the duel boot on start up..:)

I'm on the to your link http://www.upubuntu.com/2012/11/how-...ub-2-boot.html (http://www.upubuntu.com/2012/11/how-to-reinstallrepair-grub-2-boot.html) right now and will be back with my results...

Thanks..

I'd say since I couldn't run the try out on the 1st disk then there would be no point in trying that again...

You don't get 'Try Ubuntu' on the regular desktop disk either? That's weird cos you should. The screenshot is from the alternate or the desktop version?

Your other option is to download the Boot Repair ISO, make a disk and boot from that. You'll get a basic desktop and you can run Boot Repair from there.

Go here and 'Download boot-repair-disk.iso'

This is the first time I've seen this screen and to get I have to hit F12 after start up and select which HDD I want to boot too and I select the 160GB which I have Ubuntu on, Then I get a black screen with the words "Try (hd0,0):Ntfs5.

OR if I fire up the PC I get a boot list to pick Windows XP Pro or Ubuntu, if I select Ubuntu I get a fdo read error.

241497On this screen I can press c and edit things;)
